Hat Size?

I want to buy my husband a hat for Christmas, but I do not know his hat size. I googled how to find hat size but it only says to measure the circumference of your head. There is no mention on what to do if it’s not for YOU.

I took another hat he has and measured the diameter and that number sounds like a typical hat size: around 7 1/2". Am I making the right conclusion? It seems to me if I measured the circumference of the hat it would be MUCH greater than typical hat sizes.

Any ideas? I don’t want to order the wrong size.

Hats can be tricky because a lot depends on the depth. Regardless of the stated size, sometimes they just rest on the very top of your head like a yarmulka, sometimes they sink low. You might want to take measurements while he’s asleep or something.

You’d do the circumference and then convert it - usually there is a size chart somewhere on the website selling the hat. Measure the inside of the hat where it sits on his head. Mine is about 21.5" but I usually wear at least a Medium in hats, sometimes a Large.

My suggestion is two-fold:
First, log on to google or any other search engine and enter men’s hat size. you should be able to find a chart with instructions as to how to measure and determine hat sizes.
The second thing iss, why not get your husband a gift certificate to a hat store or store that sells men’s hats among other things. Put that in an envelope and pack it into a box about the size of a hat box. Gift wrap that and present him with that on Christmas.
If you put the presents under the tree ahead of time, he will go crazy trying to figure out what you got him!

Ok this sounds weird but bear with me. Take a hat that fits him well. It can be any kind of hat baseball, cowboy, beret whatever. And take that hat to a custom western wear store and find a person who “shapes” hats and ask them. I dont know what kind of hat you are thinking about but a store that specializes in hats will do. You could also go to a place that supplies local teams with hats and helmets.

BTW I wear a 7 and 1/2. So it is probable that that could be the size for your husband. But there are other things to consider too like other posters have said.

What I Did before I knew my Husbands Hat size, was try on one of his hats then seen how many Fingers I needed to make the hat snug. A crude way but it worked perfectly, same way I know if the shirt I hold up to me is just above my knees it will fit him lengthwise.

You make no mention of the type of hat that you are getting him. Cowboy hats also have a shape that matters. There are round hats and oval hats and depending on the shape of your head one or the other will fit much better. With that said, one thing you could do is make a guess, but make sure that the store you buy it from has a good return policy. That is what my wife did when she bought me a hat a few years ago.
