I just want to bring up the fact that for the first time that I have heard that this vandalism against a catholic church in Houston will be investigating as a HATE crime. It’s nice to see that people realize and recognize that Catholics are prosecuted for their religion.

**HOUSTON – **Police are calling satanic graffiti spray-painted in red all over a southeast Houston church a hate crime, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Officers with the Houston Police Department said vandals spray-painted satanic graffiti at St. Alphonsus Church, located at 9202 Manchester Street, sometime over the weekend.

The vandals spray-painted the number 666 on the church’s front door and wrote the word “Satan” on the church’s walls.

A Holy Mary statue that sits outside the church was also defaced. The vandals tagged the statue with the number 666 and painted the statue’s face and palm red.

City Council member Carol Alvarado toured the damaged and called it appalling.

"HPD is investigating this incident and will treat it as a hate crime. We are encouraging anyone that may have any information pertaining to this case to please contact HPD," Alvarado said.

P.S.—MODERATOR!—sorry I am stupid and didn’t respond to the earlier thread and made a new thread–can you move this?

Certainly appalling vandalism, but probably not a hate crime.

Sounds like just bad teenagers, who would have done the same if they had broke into the local high school or synagogue or shopping mall instead.

Maybe the kind of publicity that this kind of coverage brings will smoke out the perps.

Could be, but I don’t like the entire idea of a Hate Crime. Crime in and of itself when directed toward another person or institution is hate in some form. What good does it do differentiating it, except to create two classes of people? If you kill a person you kill a person and should get life. What is the point of tacking on 15 years for a Hate Crime to a life sentence? I just don’t like the precedent it sets because it creates two classes of people.

On the Crimes against catholic. The school I went too had vandalism against it. One Sunday they found that someone had pulled up a stop sign and thrown it through the stain-glass windows. Twice the Statue of Jesus the Teacher in the small garden had its head knocked off. So it isn’t anything new obviously.

Hey, how’s things in Ft. Huachuca? I was stationed there back in the 1960’s.
