…and a similar teaching “forgive but don’t follow”

Do you agree with the sayings? When is this difficult to do?

The first I’ve heard of, the second I don’t ever recall hearing so the ‘hate the sin not the sinner’ is my focus,
I agree with it and it’s not much of choice if one is to be a Christian.
Is it hard? For me, it is because most of the time I’m the older brother in the prodigal son parable. I admit I had a lot of resentment and/or disappointment with prodigal sons who are practising Christians who are well informed and educated on standard Christian teachings when I was younger. I still do but it’s not as bad as then. I imagine it stems from a sense of betrayal, that we agreed to a set of conditions.
I can imagine it can be hard for those who have been actually betrayed. I would imagine for someone’s spouse to commit adultery would be a major obstacle to not hate the offending spouse and other offender. Or maybe someone’s best friend scammed them.

I know what you mean, for me it was three of my older sisters, they were Catholic but turned away from it after they got divorced, and then started blaming the Church and my parents all the time. Actually not much has changed since then, 20 years or so, but I really felt betrayed, like you agreed to be Catholic, raise your kids Catholic, but instead went back on that and actually brought a lot of discord into our family through the constant blame game and negativity.

It’s like they are frozen in time, remembering me and my parents when they were younger, but not getting to know us now. They don’t have a good or close relationship with my parents and they are older.

Hating their sin of disrespect also ends up in me sometimes to hating them, but the Catholic thing to do is forgive and move on, and pray for them.

It’s like they think they are better than us, but they don’t even know us that well anymore and don’t have a clue about what we actually believe. Shows they never knew their own faith in the first place, so I don’t take their breaking their promises to raise their kids Catholic and stay married to their husband in the Church so hard. I don’t think they knew what they were getting into and the nature of marriage and raising a child in the practice of the faith.

It may be different for you, but still we must pray for the prodigal sons and daughters out there, that they may become like Christ, our Savior and Lord.
