Does anyone know the exact word used in the Koine Greek that has been translated into ‘hate’ and if this is an absolutely correct translation of that word?

Yes, the word misei means hate. It is found in Luke 14,26. Read the whole verse, and you will understand that the meaning is : when you commit to Jesus, the commitment must be absolute : no holding back. You will recall other passages with similar meaning e.g. Luke 9,59ff : "Let the dead bury the dead " and “Whoever lays his hand to the blow and looks back is unfit for the Kingdom of God”.

This is a verse that has confused my 90-year-old mother her whole life. It is as Verbum says, a comparative statement. In the context of the whole passage, the idea is that one put Jesus first, above all other things, especially if called. This is one of those things that takes on a wholey different cultural context for us than it did for first-century Jews and Greeks.
