i have a qwustion regarding hatred of wordly things, and the world,

obviously i know what the bible is speaking of, in terms of what the world offers, its riches, glory , praise by men etc…

and you must die to yourself to gain yhour life, those who gain their lives lose themselves…

however, what about things like love for a soccer club,

i am asking to get more in depth on this mystery, or more knoweldge from s omeone with wisdom1

To me, worldly things could bring pain or misfortune. Fame, power, and wealth for example. But other things are everlasting, and help build up your character and spirituality. Like love, prayer, and consideration for others.

I think that it would be ok to love or like the things you are good at, such as your hobbies like soccer.
🙂

The Jesuits have a mission statement (which i can’t currently find) and it explains this very well: God made everything to help people get to Heaven; however, each person must pick and chose among earthly things to chose *only *those things which help them to attain Heaven, and *leave the rest behind. *

So, does playing soccer help you to love your neighbor, say, through the bonds you form with your teammates? Do you feel more drawn to the good, helping a teammate improve, or the bad, celebrating when a teammate messes up because that means you are a better player than he is? That sort of thing.

Use your soccer to help you get to Heaven, don’t let it lead you downwards.

or you can choose not to hate:

I love my own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even my own life, therefore I do not follow Jesus. anti-Luke 14-26

Hi pw,

What you can do is to try this–as this is what I do, too–you can ask Jesus to make you a better person, and also ask Him to be more like Him–that you want to be more like Him as a person. I tell Jesus that I want to be more like Him–to be more kind, more loving, more patient, and so on.

If you ask Him for those things, He will definitely answer those prayer requests, and He will give you more opportunities to be like that. 🙂

You can enjoy what money has to offer (the good it can do), your house, car, computer, family, soccer club, and more. We can love our jobs, volunteering and our lives.

I think what is meant not to put ourselves, the car, computer, soccer club, family above God, not get excessively into fame, glory, praise, materialism, vanity and superficiality, to be concerned about God and others.

If you go to your soccer club instead of to church or instead of tending to your family, that’s where the problem comes in.

Soccer is good exercise, relieves stress, is a good social outlet. Sports, in general, help us minimize our aggressive tendencies, are a positive, in my opinion, (unless one beats up on other players, say).

We are to avoid being selfish, in that, I think it means to die to oneself, to think of others, sometimes even first.

Soccer’s fine, though. 👍

I don’t know much about the original translation, but I think it’s a misinterpretation of this.

I think by “the world”, what is meant is the materialism, immorality, selfishness.

The Bible tells us to love our father, mother, our neighbor, by “our neighbor”, it means everyone, basically. Christ commanded us also to love our neighbor as ourselves and love God with all our heart, mind, and soul.

So, someone seems to be deliberately misinterpreting scripture to try to advance his own position, ignoring the rest. This seems an misguided attempt to try to paint anyone who believes in Christ and the Bible as “haters” of everything and everyone.

By “hate”, I think it means not to put worldly, material matters, first.

It depends on your level of Spirituality and Devotion to God. If you find yourself staying home on a Sunday to watch your fav. soccer club then it is or has become an impediment to your journey. Now, if you don’t have struggles like the ones mentioned above then it’s not problematic to your journey. Our Holy Father Francis loves soccer but he’s not controlled by it and knows it came be a tool for good.
My point is if it’s an obsession with you then it’s problematic.

have you even read the bible?

Matthew 19:29 New International Version (NIV)

“29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.”

read it, think on it and understand it, and you will be set free of hate!

Hi without,

Instead of picking a verse, why not read the whole Matthew 19? It’s not that long. Matthew 19:29 was about Jesus’ answer to Peter the apostle, and it’s directed to the 12 apostles who followed him. Every person has his/her own call. You don’t have to be the apostles to reach eternal life.

In the middle of the chapter Jesus said to a rich man about what is good. "Do not murder. Be faithful in marriage. Do not steal. Do not tell lies about others. Respect your father and mother. And love others as much as you love yourself.” Matthew 19:18-19. I don’t see the hate in that.

About Luke 14:26, Jesus told people to love him more than others, sometimes the translation was off. It’s not hate that he teaches. In my opinion, some people have a hard time understanding this, because they don’t quite get the faith in God. As a catholic, I believe that God is my creator. He gave me parents, friends, my life, etc. To love Him more than anything doesn’t mean I hate my parents. I certainly love my parents, my family, and my friends. Even those who talk bad about me, I don’t hate them. Look what Jesus did to sinners? Did he hate? He didn’t, he loved them. But then again, it’s my understanding as a catholic, not everyone share the same understanding.

God bless!
