Deliberate hatred is contrary to charity. Hatred of the neighbor is a sin when one deliberately wishes him evil. Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him grave harm. “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.”

Scenario:

Two females are arguing with one another in one room. In an adjacent room, I’m watching football with another male. Not giving it much thought, I remark, “I wish they’d just go ahead and kill each other. Or she’d kill herself.” After saying it, I realize what I actually just said and rightly feel guilty about it. I am afraid I have just committed a mortal sin.

Have I committed a mortal sin? If it is unclear, should I avoid taking communion until I can get to confession?

Thanks for your advice ahead of time.

That’s the key: not giving it much thought.

Remember the three components of a mortal sin: full knowledge, full and free consent, and grave matter. You seem to have admitted you didn’t reflect on what you were saying, and would not have said it if you had reflected on it first. Add to that the fact that you aren’t even sure if it’s mortally sinful…

Furthermore, you didn’t actually mean what you said, and unless your friend(s) who heard you are liable to have thought you meant it, I don’t think you’ve even committed the sin of scandal.

Peace,
Dante

I seriously doubt it. Remember, if you doubt its a mortal sin, then it isn’t.
