Has anyone ever lived in one and how did your faith impact how you dealt with it?

I have never lived in one, but if you are suspicious that spirits are living in your house, I would suggest having a priest bless the house. That would hopefully take care of strange spirits that might be lurking.

Hi Makeupartist;

My husband lived in one growing up. He is one of nine kids…they all have seen the ‘ghost’ and they moved from the house, during my dh’s younger years…like maybe 3rd grade he said–and the house was then bulldozed over. And nothing was ever built on that corner again.:o Spooky, indeed.

My dh said it was an unfriendly ghost, and he said everyone, even their dad, was a bit intimidated by it. Apaprently, the homeowner (male) killed himself over finances long before they bought the house…and every person who bought it – didn’t last there long.

It’s interesting you ask about the faith aspect. My husband’s faith is very strong, but he and only two of his other siblings have remained Catholic…the others either are atheist, or follow another faith that is not Catholic. Did that ghost house have something to do with it? Maybe.

I should ask him about that. That’s a good question! But, not sure what the two would have in common…faith and a haunted house.

Do you live in a haunted home, do you feel?

I think my mother and step-father’s house is haunted. I could write a report on the reasons why. The reason I wanted to know about faith is because a lot of ways of cleansing houses are new age. Since I don’t think the spirit is a demon, I was curious how Catholics and protestants deal with human spirits.

I think it couldn’t hurt to have the home blessed by a priest…if in fact they are Catholic, and feel that is a good approach.

Well, Catholic teaching is that you go one of three places when you die: Heaven, Purgatory (before heaven) or Hell.

Catholic theology says nothing about going to a house, so, I’d suggest getting a Priest to bless the house.

Satan tries to make us believe in Spirits and Ghosts. Which causes us to dabble into New Age beliefs which is totally Pegan.

Do not acknowledge the events that happen when you think a haunting is occuring. It only opens the door wider for Satan to enter our lives. Remember, Satan only needs a small crack in the door way to enter.

I would also recommend having a Priest bless your home, and also say the rosary everyday asking the Blessed Mother to protect you along with a prayer to Saint Michael to keep satan from entering your lives.

Belief in this kind of stuff draws you away from GOD and towards the devil. It’s best to just stay away from this sort of thing. Any kind of apparitions are most likely demonic in nature and should be dealt with accordingly. God does allow our loved ones to speak us in dreams perhaps…only when absolutely necessary but other then that I would take off at the first sign of a siting and call for a blessing of the area. 👍

Not to be blunt, but what you think about the spirit is irrelevant. In fact, the less you think about the spirit, the better.

Ask a priest to come bless the house. Use blessed salt and St. Benedict medals. Pray the St. Michael prayer.

And then leave it at that. Jesus has already won the war against the evil one- only the enemy takes an awfully long time getting the news.

Houses and building can be haunted by spirits, but it is worth remembering that ghosts can also haunt people. If you live in a haunted house and are considering moving out, remember that the spirit can follow you. For this reason, it is always better to deal with the problem, rather than run away from it.

Getting a haunted house blessed by a priest is a necessary step to take. However, sometimes this will not rid the house of the spirit. A blessing will weaken a spirit for some time, but the spirit will only return and the activity will begin to increase. Blessings tend to annoy the spirits, but they are definitely necessary. The spirits become annoyed because you have wounded them. Also, remember to have the whole property blessed, including areas such as the porch and the gardens.

It is recommended that you place religious items in every room, but do not be suprised if these go missing or are destroyed. If this does happen, replace the items immediately and pray.

You must have faith. Having the house blessed and placing religious items in the rooms does not matter if you do not have faith in the power of Christ over these spirits. You must have a strong prayer life, and you must frequent the Sacraments regularly.

You will win in the end, but you have to have faith in the Lord. This is of the utmost importance.

in his talk, Father Hampsh mentioned a few of the types of ghosts that can occur.

A soul allowed to do its purgatory on earth such as the novice soul whom Padre Pio encountered.
Padre Pio told this story to padre Anastasio. “One evening, while I was alone in choir to pray, I heard the rustle of a suit and I saw a young monk that stirred next to the High altar. It seemed that the young monk was dusting the candelabra and straightening the flower vases. I thought he was Padre Leone rearranging the altar, and, since it was supper time, I went to him and I told him: “Padre Leone, go to dine, this is not the time to dust and to straighten the altar”. But a voice, that was not Father Leone’s answered me”: “I am not Padre Leone”, “and who are you? “, I asked him. “I am a brother of yours that made the noviciate here. I was ordered to clean the altar during the year of the noviciate. Unfortunately many times I didn’t reverence Jesus while passing in front of the altar, thus causing the Holy Sacrament that was preserved in the tabernacle to be disrespected. For this serious carelessness, I am still in Purgatory. Now, God, with his endless goodness, sent me here so that you may quicken the time I will enjoy Paradise. Take care of me.” I believed to be generous to that suffering soul, so I exclaimed: “you will be in Paradise tomorrow morning, when I will celebrate Holy Mass”. That soul cried: “Cruel!” Then he wept and disappeared. That complaint produced in me a wound to the heart that I have felt and I will feel my whole life. In fact I would have been able to immediately send that soul to Heaven but I condemned him to remain another night in the flames of Purgatory.”

God also allows some souls to come to us to admonish or encourage us. Our Guardian Angels also can manifest themselves in this way.

Some damned souls are sent by the devil to harass us.

And, of course, there’s demonic angels who wish to oppress us, distract, deceive, and drive us to despair.

Also demonic souls can masquerade as dead loved ones.

In any case, if a soul can be identified, have a Mass said for them or for the souls of those who have lived in the haunted house.

Always have your house blessed. And, if you can, have a Mass said in your house. Use sacramentals and lead a sacramental life.

I think it’s not very smart to ignore the supernatural activity around us. It’s better to be prepared and armed and take action.

Here is what you should do if you are experiencing a haunting:

  1. *]Attend Confession and Mass weekly. You must be in a state of grace.
*]Place a religious image or item such as a crucifix in every room.
*]Have the entire property blessed by a priest.
*]Read the Bible and pray the Rosary daily.
*]Recite and read Psalm 91 daily.
*]Have a Mass said for the spirit(s) who are haunting your house.
*]Pray to St. Michael asking for his protection and deliverance.
*]Create a loving home and DO NOT argue with your spouse or family. They will feed off any negative energy.
A soul allowed to do its purgatory on earth
This is the reason I would advise people to have a Mass said for the spirit(s). They may be poor souls who are experiencing their purgatory on earth. Having a Mass said for these spirits will help them. If the spirits are not holy souls, then having a Mass said will not cause any harm.

Here is what you should not do:

    1. *]Do not provoke the spirit or challenge it directly. You may not be prepared for the consequences. Prayer should be your only response to any activity.
*]Do not command the spirit to leave. Ask Jesus to expel the spirit(s) and pray to the Saints asking for deliverance.
*]Do not engage in any occult practices in an attempt to communicate with the spirits.
*]Do not believe anything the spirit tells you.
*]Do not engage in non-Christian practices in an attempt to expel the spirit(s).

Every day will be a battle, and it will be extremely trying. However, DO NOT LOSE FAITH. You must always believe in the power of Christ.

Go to the Church for help, and look for a priest who is experienced in this area. The Church has the ability to deal with any form of activity. The most important thing is to pray daily for deliverance and protection.

    1. Thank you! How did you learn so much about ghosts?

I have had numerous paranormal experiences in my lifetime, but I do not talk about them because I refuse to give the spirits any recognition. I try not to dwell on negativity because I am cautious not to invite them in. A morbid fascination causes many people to accidently open a doorway and invite the spirits into their lives. It is enough to know that they exist; don’t go looking for experiences!

Experience of this kind can be extremely traumatic if you are not prepared for them; they are still traumatic when you fight in the manner prescribed above, but the grace of God will help you defeat and overcome the entities. Also, the grace of God will give you strength and peace.

I believe in the reality of hauntings and spiritual phenomena. It is part of life. For this reason, I decided that I’d better be prepared in case I ever live through an extended haunting. In order to prepare myself, I read many articles and I have also learned a lot through this forum. There are many people here who have had spiritual experiences, and they have excellent advice. I take no credit for the above advice; I’m just passing on what I have been taught.

The life of a Catholic is a battle between good and evil. We must fight against sin and do our best to be conformed to Christ. Spiritual warfare is an aspect of all our lives.

I’m very impressed anyway, Dempsey. You have a lot of knowledge. Thank-you very much for sharing. 👍

I’ve never really thought about it like this. I’ve never dealt in the occult. I would never use a oujia board, but I have read books about ghosts(non-fiction) and watch shows like paranormal state. I never realized that would put me at risk. It’s kind of weird because I am TERRIFIED of funeral homes. Dead bodies make me sick to my stomach, but I’ve always had this fascination with spirits.

Watching paranormal shows is fine, as long as you realise that they are not entirely accurate or true. Don’t forget that they will sensationalize the shows in order to attract viewers.

By morbid fascination, I was referring to the fact that many people visit clairvoyants or psychic mediums in order to have spiritual experiences. Many people go on ghost hunts for “fun” and “excitement.” Doing these things is dangerous and it could open a door to the supernatural that is extremely hard to close. Practicing divination is like unlocking the door to your house and letting everybody know about it! Sooner or later you are going to get unwanted visitors.

I have also watched these paranormal shows but I am careful not to accept any viewpoints or believe in any practices that go against my Catholic faith. The Catholic Church is the most knowledgeable institution in the world regarding ghosts and hauntings. The Church has dealt with these issues for two thousand years! They know everything there is to know.

Deal with ghosts in the manner taught and practiced by the Catholic Church. Rely on her for support and help. Help may be difficult to find but persevere and God will lead you to a priest who has experience in this field and is able to help. Thankfully, Pope Benedict is ensuring that more and more Exorcists are trained. In the future, the faithful will have access to many priests who are able to deal effectively with spiritual phenomena.

That’s an excellent way of putting it. I actually once heard that using a ouija board is like calling random numbers on the phone and asking advice.

I know where you are coming from. Personally, I have the same problem. All though they come to me for help and how to know Jesus to go to the other side. I have a gift called the gift of discernment. I also can sence angels an demons and feel presents from them. I want to ask you Makeupartist, what makes you so sure it isnt demonic and just human spirit lurking in the home? Can you lay out details for me maybe I can figure out if it is demonic or human for you too and see if you are right. I am not psychic or mediumistic. I dont care for that I have the holy spirit working with in me and I have the gift of discernment. Knowing who is who and what is what. 👍
