Hav 2 b confirmed 2 go 2 confession?

I’ma baptized Catholic, but I have not been confirmed. My parents never took me to confession and I want to start to go. I went to the Cathedral of Saint Barnabas last week and they had a beautiful traditional confessional and when I saw it I just wanted to jump in and recieve absolution for my sins.

However, do I have to be confirmed to go to Confession?

Any help with this would be really great!

You should call the church and talk to the priest and explain it all, then follow his advice.

Usually children have confession prior to first communion, at around age 7, then have confirmation at 8th grade.

When I was RCIA, those receiving the eucharist and confirmation on Easter Vigil were required to go to confession prior to this.
 
The above advice is all very good (talk to a priest). However, to directly answer your question, no! You do not have to be confirmed to recieve confession. Anyone who is baptised and a member of the Catholic church can go to confession at any time they want. If its your first confession, just tell the priest that, and he will walk you through it.

Confession is normally required before reception of first communion…

Well, I am in the same shoes as you are (Though I am more of a fallen Catholic and became an agnostic for 16 years). I have asked a similar question to this earlyer. Since you are baptised Catholic, you are still technicly Catholic (A supprise that I have learned in my previous question).
I know there are two pathways for this, one is to ask your local priest or attend RCIA. I myself am not confurmed yet and hopefully plan to attend RCIA after college. I chose to go with the RCIA path and guidence from a priest since I need all the help I can get since I never was raised in my faith ;).
I encurage you to ask your local Catholic priest, I know he would best prescribe the best education path for you :).
 
Why wait till after college to begin RCIA…Most college campuses both secular and Catholic will have a Newman center which is the hub for Catholic mass, etc. I am sure they provide sacramental instruction as well. Many college students even go back to their colleges have their marriages witnessed by the priests that ministered to them in college. Just a thought!

Well, my college is a small community college and does not have a Newman center nor do we have our own Chaplain. Plus being a commuter and having to much to do (Karate class three times a week and club meetings on mondays) is also a factor.

If you have been Baptized Catholic and received your First Holy Communion. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available to you.

If there is a will, there is a way. Lets say If you were to meet Peter at the gates of Heaven tomorrow and he asked you why? Would you feel comfortable saying, I just did not have time? :eek:

“He will come like a theif in the night” Why wait! Your soul is at risk. Sorry, I am not trying to scare you, but just saying the obvious.

If you are baptized Catholic and seeking confirmation or other sacrements, go! My sister’s Catholic Priest told her Non-Catholic friend he would hear her confession when she said she was very intrigued and wondered if she could be forgiven of her sins too! 😉

The only Sacramental requirement for valid Confession is Baptism. If you have a strong desire to go to Confession, speak with the pastor. Reconciliation is a private Sacrament, it is not a public Sacrament. He may allow you access to this Sacrament as long as you do not tell others. Because that would possibly make them feel left out. It is very important before receiving any Sacrament to fully understand the Sacrament, it’s purpose and effects.

Thank you, I thought for a minute ther I wouldn’t be able to go confession til i’d had my 1st communion!
