Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today’s “major” Feast Day is the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, but it is also the Feast of The Immaculate Heart of Mary. Every Saturday traditionally is “Marian” because of her unique faithfulness in waiting for the Resurrection after Good Friday. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, however, has taken on greater emphasis after the Fatima apparitions, particularly through Sister Lucia, the oldest of the three children. In the second apparition, that of June 13,1917 Lucia had asked the Lady, “Will you take us to heaven?” The Virgin responded:
Yes, I shall take Jacinta and Francisco soon, but you will remain a little longer, since Jesus wishes you to make me known and loved on earth. He wishes also for you to establish devotion in the world to my Immaculate Heart.
Lucia was to hear and write more. In a later apparition to Sister Lucia: Dec. 10, 1925:
Lucia was a postulant in the Convent of St. Dorothy in Pontevedra, Spain when she had the apparition of our Blessed Mother. She was standing over a cloud of light with the Child Jesus at her side. The Blessed Virgin put one hand on Lucia’s shoulder, while her other hand sustained her Immaculate Heart that was surrounded with thorns. The Child Jesus said: “Have compassion on the Heart of your Blessed Mother. It is surrounded with thorns that ungrateful men pierce each moment, and there is no one that is willing to offer an act of reparation to take the thorns away.”
Our Lady immediately said to Lucia: “Look, my daughter. My Heart is surrounded with thorns that ungrateful men pierce unceasingly with their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me and announce that for all those, who for five consecutive first Saturdays, confess, receive Holy Communion, pray the Holy Rosary and accompany me for 15 minutes by meditating the mysteries of the Holy Rosary with the intention to do reparation, I promise to assist them at the hour of death with the graces needed for salvation.”
In the last book Sister Lucia wrote, “Calls” from the Message of Fatima, Sister Lucia wrote in Chapter 13, these words of Mary: “Jesus wants…to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart…to bring people to a full consecration through conversion, self-dedication, intimate esteem, veneration and love…it is in this spirit of consecration and conversion that God wishes to establish in the world devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”

Mary always seeks God’s Will and not merely her own. She keeps nothing for herself, as St. Louis de Montfort tells us, when we say “Mary”, she says “God”. I hope all of us make an effort today to hear the the words of Jesus to us: “Have Compassion on the Heart of your Blessed Mother. It is surrounded with thorns that ungrateful men pierce each moment, and there is no one that is willing to offer an act of reparation to take the thorns away.” Let us please offer her our compassion today. By God’s grace may we seriously seek our own ongoing conversion and deeper consecration to Jesus through Mary.

How much Jesus loves us to give us the Immaculate Heart of His Mother and ours!

Here is something wonderful to contemplate from Pope Pius 12th, when one considers how glorious our Mother is, and how inexpressibly close to each one of us at the same time:

From Pius 12ths Encyclical Magnae Dei Matris:
  1. When we have recourse to Mary in prayer, we are having recourse to the Mother of mercy, who is so well disposed toward us that, whatever the necessity that presses upon us especially in attaining eternal life, she is instantly at our side of her own accord, even though she has not been invoked. She dispenses grace with a generous hand from that treasure with which from the beginning she was divinely endowed in fullest abundance that she might be worthy to be the Mother of God. By the fullness of grace which confers on her the most illustrious of her many titles, the Blessed Virgin is infinitely superior to all the hierarchies of men and angels, the one creature who is closest of all to Christ. “It is a great thing in any saint to have grace sufficient for the salvation of many souls; but to have enough to suffice for the salvation of everybody in the world, is the greatest of all; and this is found in Christ and in the Blessed Virgin.”(1)

Lovely post, thanks.
Thanks for your reply, Mary. Blessings on this beautiful Feast of Mary’s Immaculate Heart – may we ever be a comfort to her, striving to glorify our Father as Jesus and she did on this earth!

O my Jesus, pardon us and save us from our sins, draw all souls to heaven especially those in most need of Your Mercy. Mary, Mother of the Church pray for us.

Dear brother Pat,

May this be a blessed Feast day for you! Thanks for your reply, and for your continuing love and devotion to Jesus through Mary. Thanks also for the quote from Pope Pius XII and the link to his encyclical. 🙂
