Have I sinned?

I was in confession yesterday. However, during mass, I thought about different things and how nice it was to be free of my sins, but that’s not the point.

My thoughts eventually led me to think about my old priest who passed away several years ago. I can’t say if he was a good or bad priest, but I can say that the priest that I go to now in the traditional mass seems to be better. For example, my caholic lessons as a child with the old priest didn’t work so well, since I didn’t really learn what was essential.

The next moment, I felt some frustration and quite impulsively thought: “That was a bad priest”, but instead of the word bad I used a much worse word. Just 2-3 seconds later I regretted thinking that. Thing is, it was quite an impulsive though, and it wasn’t thoroughly thought through. Therefore, it feels like the thought was with semi-conscent.

Worse is that I recieved communion since I thought that the priest wanted me to do it, and that recieveing in would help me with grace and such. Now I’m afraid however that I may have commited a grave sin becuase of that thought and then recieved communion.

Please help me sort this out!

I think your okay. Peoples minds will always have impulsive thoughts and there’s nothing we can do about it. At least your conscious is developed enough to think about that. If anything it was a venial sin because you didn’t have intent and that would be erased with the blessed sacrament.

No problem here.

Consider…

Your mind wandered. One could even say that you entered something of a contemplative state. In such a state thoughts come unbidden. They sort of wash in and out and around. However - you are somewhat separate from those thoughts and that is why - in just a couple of seconds - you recognized analyzed and dismissed (rejected) the thought.

So there is no real problem here. Certainly no serious sin.
you were fine to receive communion.

So you didn’t like your old priest. Whats the big deal?
Yes. Jesus never said we must like everyone. He said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” If you wish them well, even if you disapprove of them, that may be the best you can do.

And the fact that this thought came and you turned from it quickly says that you do not wish him ill, or like thinking badly of him. So I’d say, no sin, or at least no lasting sin.

But you may wish to consider your feelings for that priest and forgive him, for your own peace of mind.
