Have People Lost Their Minds By Ordering Stuff Online?

Fail to see how expecting people to be professional and charitable while at work is “almighty dollar rules”, but, okay.
Its all in how we define the word professional. You can get the job done without stepping on the people you are asking to do the job just to make a few bucks more.

But ordering things online isn’t a definite sin.

It can be a sin. But on the other hand - if I decide it’s easier to have someone ship cat food to my door rather than making a stop after work, you’re still going to see a lot of packages. In my experience online ordering may actually overall save money, because I have more options. (I’m boot shopping now because I have nothing that’s both work appropriate and weather safe, and online is much better for having access to long lasting options.)

It’s very easy to imagine all the sins other people are committing. But honestly this is more the equivalent of seeing a man and a woman sitting together at a coffee shop and then going on about the dangers of affairs and cheating on your spouse.

I am asking people to be respectful of their clients. To remember those customers pay one’s salary. Sitting around the loading dock running down Mrs Jones because you deliver so many packages to her is not how a professional behaves.

We are called to point out sin in this world and hopefully people will hear and change their ways.
That is what the prophets did, and I suppose we are all called to be prophets, communicating God’s truth to others. Calling out other people’s faults is a kind of truth, but not the most important truth we can communicate. What other truths about God can we show to others?

I strongly advise caution. There is a risk to our own spiritual well-being if we fix our attention on the faults and failings of others. While we are dwelling on other’s sins, our mind is distracted from what is good in our neighbor and how we can best serve our neighbor. How can we contemplate the love of God when we are focused on the sins of our neighbor?

don’t know the state of the person’s soul who is pro-abortion but yet I everyday pronounce the evils of abortion to those who are for it. I do not know the state of the person’s soul who is cheating on their spouse but yet I talk to many about fidelity in marriage.
But, of course, these aren’t the same things at all. These are objectively immoral actions—shopping is not.

It’s really not up to you to determine whether someone who shops online has motives that are anything other than, “Hey, isn’t it great I don’t have to drive around to 10 stores to get my water filters, groceries, clothing, shoes…; I can do my shopping online.”

I used to live in an apartment that still had its little milk delivery compartment built into the wall. There was a door inside and a door outside-- the milkman would leave the milk bottles inside the compartment from their side, and the resident would leave the empties for collection from their side.

I remember watching movies from the 30’s and the 40’s that would have department store delivery vans delivering clothes and other items to residents. The item would be purchased-- but rather than carrying it home, it would be delivered by the delivery guy.

I remember hearing commercials even in the 80’s about phoning in your order to the grocery stores. My mom and others of her generation never opted for that-- she was the kind of person who wanted to select her own produce-- but I know senior citizens liked it for things that you didn’t have to be particular about (boxed goods, cleaning supplies, etc).

I know urban people who are busy with long commutes and don’t feel like fighting city traffic will use Amazon Prime for their daily grocery shopping.

I live in a rural area. I’ll occasionally order something specialized online-- a certain brand of tea that I usually have to make a 2-hr round trip to get. Or a certain kind of fabric or trim for a project that I’d have to drive hundreds of miles to find in a bricks-and-mortar store-- and even then, it’s not guaranteed. Or maybe I want ankle boots, and it’s the wrong month to find them in the store, or they’re not even in style this season. Or maybe I want a particular book that hasn’t been in print in decades, and there’s no way to find whether or not any particular used bookstore in a 100-mile radius happens to have a copy.

So, yeah. I definitely understand the uptick in package deliveries. Deliveries have always happened, but it’s so much easier to get niche-y stuff rather than pawing through stuff randomly and trying to find something kinda sorta like what you want… and so few places are doing their own deliveries these days.

Many people don’t go to church anymore and a lot of those that do kind of pick and choose what they want to believe and what they don’t so I share God’s Truth with them. How else are they to know they might be sinning in God’s eyes. I want to remind them that there is a God and He loves them very much but he has commandments for us to follow. In explaining this to the people I talk with, they see that there are actual people who believe in God’s Word. Some are interested in hearing more some aren’t but it gets the Word out and maybe make a difference in this world which can act so Godless sometimes. So to cap this off with your question for me of which Chapter and verse do I find what I do, I would say Matthew 28:16-20. Jesus didn’t show step by step instructions so I’m improvising, learning what works and what doesn’t as I go.

I’m sorry if I offended you or anyone else. I preach God’s Word the best way I know how. God bless.

You are still missing my point, I think its great that people are shopping online just don’t overindulge. Consumerism and Materialism are a problem in our society. Help change the world for the better. Overindulging in any thing (except God) is always sinful - gluttony, gambling, drugs, work, sleep, and so on.

I guess we are not seeing eye to eye, sorry if I offended you too. God Bless.

I’m not offended at all. I’m saying you have no idea who is overindulging and who’s just doing their shopping.

In the city where I live many malls have closed. Sears and KMarts have closed.
People lead busy lives and find online ordering easier.

Personally, I never order online. I am a shopper that likes to see the product in front of me in person and be able to hold it and touch it. Eventually, I will probably have to give in.

Well that is a different point. But, IMHO, Consumerism and Materialism did not become problematic because of online shopping nor online anything – They are a far older problem than that. Has online shopping contributed to or increased the level of Consumerism and Materialism? Perhaps, but I know no evidence to say so. (Even if your current role in the transaction may make your own participation more evident)

Personally, as an employee of one of the world’s largest online retailers* I am grateful that people shop online, and that my providing a service to them puts a roof over my family’s heads and food upon our plates. As a former employee of one of the three big package delivery companies**, I was grateful for online shoppers, and that by my providing a service to them I was able to put a roof over my family’s head and food upon our plates.

Yes, it starts with a and ends with mazon, and I do not speak for the company in this or any other forum unless I explicitly state otherwise.

And I am pretty sure that if my current employer ever stopped doing business with my previous employer, my previous employer and all of its employees would fall into deep, deep financial peril.

I am not sure what this has to do with your job at the big package delivery company. You are sharing God’s truth, reminding, and explaining this to whom? The customers? Us here at the forum?

In your original post, I thought you came here to vent and perhaps get some support or advice. It seems you have accomplished and received all that, but you want something more. What would you like us to do for you?

Continue to improve ourselves and society - continue to do God’s work and make disciples of everyone.

I guess you are having a much better over all first hand account of online buying than most of us here.
There seems to be lots of pro’s and cons .It’s very hard to tell if in the bigger picture it’s a good thing or not.
I do know it can become an addiction for some ,and that isn’t good.

You may want to consider the method that Christ gave us in Scripture:

Let your light so shine before men that they see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.

and

By this will all men know you are my disciples, that you love one another.

The Gospel is good news, let us spread it through our joy and love!

This is also why the big name stores continue to fold; they cannot compete with the prices and “free shipping” of the new Empire of the Sun- Amazon. Add to this such an excessive time on cell phones that folks never make eye contact anymore and hold on to these things like a fundamentalist holds on to a Bible,

Absolutely, I love sharing God’s good Word with everyone who listens.

Here are some guidelines that will help out a person who might have an excessive shopping disorder. To many people don’t think about this or laugh at the thought of an excessive shopping disorder but for a lot of people its real and it can be as damaging to their lives as drug addiction, alcohol addictions or any other kind of addiction. Its the feeling of being lonely and thinking nobody cares about you so you try to make yourself feel better by indulging in these addictions.

I don’t say this only on this forum. I say it at work at the office, to my customers, to my family and friends, to anybody who will listen and benefit from what I say. Sometimes you have to say a little bit more than “God loves you”. Sometimes you have to explain to people why He loves you and why what the person, who has the addiction, is doing is destructive to themselves. A lot of people don’t even realize its a problem. Help them with love and care .
