Have started reading the entire Bible. Hope to finish in a year

Hi everyone. I have finally started a Bible reading plan where I will finish reading the entire Bible within a year. If you go to www.christianitytoday.com they have a thing where you can sign up for a free Bible reading plan and read your readings online and then mark them complete. You get a selection of the Bible for each day to read and when you are completed with that section, you hit the Mark Complete button and wallah! it’s done and ready for the next day. I highly recommend this. And yes, they do have Catholic Bible versions available. I am using the Revised Standard Version with Apocrypha.

Don’t read it cover to cover. Follow a Catholic study guide plan. The Bible by itself is imponderable to the average person, not that I’m saying you’re average.

I agree. Many people have read the Bible cover to cover and did not get much out of the exercise. You should try a Catholic Study Guide if you want to understand it with the Church.

Meanwhile here is a guide to reading both the Bible and the Cathechism in one year:

Or you can still use that web site you gave. But I would recommend taking few days of and listenning to the talk called Our Father’s Plan which basically give the bigger picture of the whole Bible. It summarize what particular books are talking about and in which context they were written. Which books were written at about the same time or refer to each other or are directly related and in which way. Things like that. I like this talk very much, it actually present a chronological story which the Bible is telling from Creation to the End times. So when you start doing your own reading, you have an idea of what you are reading.

But then some do. No one I dont think should be discouraged from reading Scripture under any terms…perhaps to mention (and to have one handy) that a Catholic Study Guide is very useful for those who struggle with Scripture. Do you know of one please, and one that does not cost?

I first read The Bible from cover to cover at 7yrs of age because the pictures (some of them) were of the Holy Land and Jerusalem and I was fascinated that real pictures were available so handy.
I certainly understood the Bible at that age as a story unfolding - of a people being prepared - the event and what happened after…at least in a vague sort of way. That read began my lifelong love of Scripture.
Our extremely large family Bible ( and now passed on to me after the death of our parents. I am the eldest child) still has a burn mark through the centre pages . I fell asleep after lights out and had been (and forbidden!) reading via candle light. Luckly my parents could smell smoke and averted a disaster - but I sure was in hot water.

Not all may be able to read Scripture at first…but they should not be discouraged from the attempt and desire and to write down for them a good (hopefully free) Catholic study guide one has on hand.

I get heaps of junkmail in my letterbox advising of free study courses locally - but none of them are Catholic and most cult like Christian sects. To my knowledge and not of necessity accurate, study guides that are Catholic here in Australia do cost dollars.

The speakers also suggest a written guide which could probably be ordered from EWTN and sent free of charge I am not sure. However what I am sure is that the same Dr. Hahn with others run a free Bible study internet site. See: salvationhistory.com
