I have the house to myself for a week. It’s only been a few days, and it’s already very lonely. I do have two dogs with me, so better than nothing for sure. But yeah, I’m really sad right now. I’m working from home currently, so I don’t even get out of the house for work or anything… plus my closest friends are all either out of town or otherwise occupied (two of them have a newborn, praise the Lord), well my wife will be back in 4 days or so, but that seems like so far away… I’m already beginning to talk to myself out of loneliness!!! I did go to Mass today but it’s only an hour… 😦

I will say this, though, there HAS been one positive aspect about this time. I think I really learned a big time lesson about how the widowed and/or family-less/friend-less (are those words?) must feel. It has really encouraged me to get involved with this program they have in my parish where they set you up to visit with a lonely person in a nursing home. So I’m glad some good has come out of it in the sense that it will increase my compassion for people in such situations.

I used to have to be separated from my husband for extended periods, and the first three or four days were by far the worst for me. It’s the worst if you’re the one left at home, too. You keep feeling where they ought to be; you can almost smell them. Music helped me, too, especially ballads and other “talking” songs, and also watching episodes of TV where I liked the characters. (One does grasp at straws!)

Taking care of infants can make a person (or a couple) feel isolated, too. If you can cook, consider taking a casserole or otherwise consider taking some take-out food to the new parents in your life. One of the best things anybody did when our twins were little babies was to bring us dinner and then hold the babies while my husband and i got to eat a meal together. It wasn’t as if my husband couldn’t go out and get it, but it was different, somehow. We had my MIL there, too, so it wasn’t as if we were totally alone. I don’t know, felt good to have some outside rejoicing injected in as those early days wore on. It may seem like too short a visit to you, but it can make a lasting difference to your friends!

I live with two dogs myself! they are a great excuse to get out of the house and go to the park to throw a puppy ball. Perhaps you could get out for a walk and look for a few things to talk to your wife about when she gets home. The redwing blackbirds should be out soon. We have ducks swimming in our litle lake. I just saw the first trillium of spring.
If you walk those dogs often enough and wave at the strangers passing by, you will not only give strangers a reason to smile, you will start getting to know your community.
Do go out; that change of air and change of pace will do you good and your wife will love to hear about what you have seen and done in her absence. perhaps you will come up with a few things you would love to show her when she returns.
May God bless you. It is such a blessing to appreciate a spouse the way that you do and to be in a positon to share that with her.

You could try saying the Rosary, or praying and meditating in other ways–renewing your relationship with God. Solitude can be a great aid in spiritual growth.

On the rare occasions that I have had the house to myself, I use the time to do projects like painting a room, ripping up carpet, building something in the garage, or sorting out my many piles of magazine clippings. 😉 I find that while I miss my family, I can get some jobs done without interruption and I can leave things where they are without having to clean up everything until I can get back to it. Usually my husband comes home and looks around, expecting to see something different and was disappointed once when I hadn’t changed anything. I am pretty much in charge of all the decorating, he likes what I choose so it’s never been a problem. 🙂
