Have to work Sundays

I have worked for a retale box store for 5 years now. Up until June, I have had most sundays off. Now there is new management, who has said everyone must work the weekend including Sundays. I still make it to mass. So am I sinning working Sunday? I am looking for another job, but this could take some time, with the economy. I don’t have alot of skills, have some learning disabilities. If I quit it means no money for gas, no Medical. And I wont be able to pay my bills. I really feel stuck here.:confused:
 
Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. the faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health. CCC 2185

See if you can work the closing shift on Sunday; that will give you at least the day off for Mass.

No you are not sinning. Do your best to meet your obligations to your faith and family as well as managing to rest on Sunday’s. Many people have to work on Sunday’s. My Dh is in Law Enforcement and years ago I was a nurse. You do the best you can.
 
I know what your feeling. It is something you should meditate and find out for yourself if you should stay or go. nothing interferes with you and God. There are lots of jobs out there. You can give it a try though and if it goes it does if not then it doesnt.
 
I have the same question regarding playing baseball? And is praying when wearing a hat ok (I read it was disrespectful once)?
 
OP is certainly not sinning by working on Sunday in this fashion. Not at all.

Playing baseball on Sunday? No, it is a fun pastime, a way to relax and rest on the Lord’s day. Now, having professional games, where lots of people are forced to work on Sunday to support the game? That is open for debate.

GOD UNDERSTANDS!

I’m a retired Reatial Store manger and Buyer [at diferent times].

IF one is TRULY unable to fulfill our Sunday and Holy Day Obligations: 1. Say a Rosary on the way to or from work AND make Mass up during the week.

God ONLY expects us to do WHAT he makes available for us to do:D

Nope, you’re certainly not sinning, but if you can, do what I’m trying to do: When you find a new job, indicate on your application that you will not work Sundays. 👍

I always take comfort from the passage Matthew 12:11 for having to work on Sundays:

“He said to them, ‘Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out?”
 
No, it is not as earlier posters have said before to work on Sundays.

But the question in general is very interesting. No wonder the Church has a very open response.

On the one hand, we need rest. We give most of our time to the world and our control over our part in the world: work, local news, national news, paying the bills, raising a family. God created the Sabbath so that we could let go of our control over these affairs for a day, and put him in the center of our lives, and remember that we will not, and cannot, control earthly affairs for long.

On the other hand, Christians are living in the Covenant of the New Testament. There are still too many people in need of our good works to stop for a day – especially if you’re a police officer, doctor, etc.
 
Not at all. Biblically, working on Sunday is not sin as, by the way, it is the first day of the week. Only on the Sabbath that all work is forbidden, but even then we are told to obey those in authority as it is God’s prerogative to deal with them. In other words, it has to be outside your control that you may work.

So, you are fine, no need to worry.
