Hello all,

A little perspective, opinion, help, and a whole lot of prayer would be appreciated here.

A few years ago, my brother brought home a Pentecostal. We really didn’t know much about Pentecostals until it was too late. This woman was totally into my brother, but stand-offish with me and my sister (adults). She kissed my parents’ rears (my dad in particular). And when it came to my younger siblings, well, she was just all sunshine and roses. I should say, too, that my sister and I never did anything but welcome her into our homes and try to make her feel welcome. My brother excused away her actions by saying she was not use to, and overwhelmed by, a large family. Of course this is utter b.s.

At first she said she was fine with him being Catholic and even attended Sunday Masses with us once they were engaged. Of course, he in return started going with her to her services. Her father is the preacher at their “church.” (I’m sorry if I am sarcastic here, but in my opinion how can he possibly lead a group of people with his own interpretation of God’s own Bible? And worse yet, his son is suppose to be following next in line and he is the biggest porn addict I’ve ever known! How can they be “saved” and not have to work at keeping themselves saved? Ugh, they confuse and horrify me! ) Anyways, unbeknown to my family, this family BAPTIZED my brother! He didn’t tell us until after the marriage! The marriage, by the way, was suppose to be a compromise, they were to be wed by her father and then go have the marriage blessed in the Catholic Church. 🤷 This, of course, did not happen, and we have not seen him in our church since. (he was hurt when we had our 5th child and did not ask him to be godfather, as he is to our other 4… sorry, but no way)

Even though we were extremely hurt by all of this, we did not want to alienate him, so we remained friendly and prayed hopefully. His wife has tried to convert at least one of my sisters. Now the gloves are off and my parents are on the warpath because we are tired of being nice and getting slapped in the face. (She has done sooo much more)

The most recent thing to pull us apart has been over my sister. She is 17 yrs old and use to be very close to our brother. She has gone through some emotional issues in the past couple years and has acted out periodically. One thing she has done has been to hurt herself. She has burned herself with a cigarette, and a few other things that were self-destructive. Her situation is acknowledged and is being handled, but my SIL has told my brother (actually yelled it in hearing range of another sibling) that because our sister is hurting herself, she is a sinner and not saved, and he may not have any thing more to do with her! How un-Christian is that?!?! And to my complete astonishment, my brother is obeying her! He told our other brother today in a text message that he is working on our sister’s birthday and then has church, so he won’t be able to come over. When my younger brother suggested that he come later in the evening, there was no response, and all communication ended. My parents are hurt and furious that he would let this woman come between him and his sister and that he would completely write off his sister at her bequest! Our sister is very hurt and upset, and of course so are the rest of us.

How can I help?

I bought a couple of books for him (101 things all Catholics should know, and another about the rosary) and intend to give him those along with a St. Michael medal and a rosary sometime in secret. I know we lost him because he was not knowledgeable enough to defend his faith to a Pentecostal preacher, so I was hoping to strengthen him a bit. He did admit to my mother recently that he still believes in the Trinity and in the Real Presence, but obviously has a far way to go if he does not see the need to get his butt back to church now! I know his wife has got some strange “hold” over him, its cult-like in my opinion. This is her 4th marriage, and she has children from 2 other men that my brother loves and feels responsible for. (they are all teens, one of whom is quite troubled and angry) She hates for him to have any contact with his family (use to call him a momma’s boy) and if he is at my parents’ house she sends him barrages of angry texts, or yells at him over the phone that he had better not be saying bad things about her to them.

My parents have just this week told him to divorce her, and I fear this may have been too much. How do we break this hold? Honestly, if she were to convert tomorrow I would forgive her and welcome her with open arms, but I cannot accept the way she is right now. She is mean and abusive and I WANT MY BROTHER BACK! :crying:

I’m so sorry this got as long as it has, but please, someone help us!

Thank you

First, you cannot control your brother. Each of us is in control of our own path, but we can’t force other people to agree with us - it just doesn’t work.

Second, whatever “hold” your brother’s wife has over him, she has because he wants her to. She has no more power than you do to change him against his will.

Third, if she has been divorced in the past, then there is no way she can marry your brother in the Catholic Church, since she is already married-for-lfe to another man. (This is most likely the reason that he quit going to Catholic Church - a priest probably told him that it was not possible for them to have their marriage blessed in the Catholic Church, due to her previous marriage.)

I agree, my brother is absolutely accountable for his own actions.

My brother use to be very close to our sister. He never would have abandoned her. Why would he abandon her for this woman? She has emotionally beat him down and he has given himself over.

If he were a woman, it would be a different story. Then it would be seen as abuse, the way she treats him.

I agree, they probably never even saw a priest. The lies he’s told for her are probably more than we know.

Can anyone recommend a book or something that will help him? I don’t want to cut him off completely. We all see him slipping further and further away. What can we do? She keeps pulling him further from his family. Soon he will be no more than a memory, living just down the road…

If what you say is true, then it’s still abuse - but I think it is harder for men to recognize or acknowledge that they are being abused - they want to think that they are in control of everything.

Maybe just point out to him that if he ever needs anything, you are always there for him. Tell him that you are upset by many things, but only because it seems to you that he is being hurt, and you don’t like to see him hurt. Be specific. Say, “It hurts my heart to see her yelling at you like that; you don’t deserve that.”

My brother was “hanging out” with our 17 & 19 yr old brother and sister at a waffle house over the summer. Time got away from them and the wife called to say how late it was. (My brother later confided to me that she told him over the phone to get out and that she was putting his stuff on the lawn.) He rushed home. While on the way home, our sister called to say sorry to her for keeping him so late. My SIL called her a little whore!!! My sister and brother (the one married) both asked me to not tell our mom. A couple weeks ago I had to. I couldn’t keep it from her.

How do I keep from hating her?

That all sounds rather ridiculous.

Anyway, enh, hate’s an interesting thing, you know? One can’t control how one feels; though, one can control how much they dwell on something that angers or annoys them. Hate’s one of those things that develops over time, so, I guess I just say, don’t dwell on what about her angers you–just, you know, pray, or think about what you can do to remedy the situation.

This lady sounds a little nuts, but, as was said earlier, your brother doesn’t have to listen to her. I mean, maybe you could tell him to grow a backbone. Seriously.

And, not to be terribly depressing, but…this ultimately comes down to what your brother wants. As horrible as this may sound, if he chooses to distance himself from your family, then, well, I suppose you’ll just have to let go. It’s a rather depressing experience; I’ve gone through it myself, actually. I’ve realized that if the other side doesn’t want a resolution, you can’t force anything.

Here’s to hoping for you.

Pray for him, love him.

If this woman has a number of ex husbands, chances are he will join their ranks in the future. He will need a soft place to land, with people who love him and a Church that will help him heal.

There is nothing you and your family can do but PRAY. And pray, and pray, and pray. Pray to every saint you can think of. And don’t give up, no matter what happens. Our God is an awesome God! Hold on to that. And I"ll pray, too.

Peace,
Linda

For me it’s my little brother. The youngest of four. Also weak in his faith. She is in AA and a Pentacostal. She has him wrapped around her finger. My stories can top what you’ve posted. Stuff like she threatened to slit my mothers throat…she threatened to take the kids on the run and never let my brother see them again, they weren’t married at the time.

Anyway we backed off. We put it in God’s hands. My brother is 30 years old. Not a baby. It’s up to him.

I have forgiven I just not stupid enough to forget.

She has made him mad before. He showed up at my door to ask me how to defend our faith to her. But that was a year ago. They were married in the Catholic Church and all 3 of their kids were baptised in the Church. I even enrolled them into CCD with that thought that they’d love to get rid of the kids for an hour. 😉

They stopped everything at the end of the year and didn’t pick it up the following year. His oldest and our 4th son were suppose to make their 1st Holy Communion at the same time but his son wasn’t enrolled that year. I guess my little brother was kinda sad about it,so were our parents, and his son is a “favorite” of our parents:rolleyes:

Hand it over to God. Set a good example with your family and just be there when he does need you.

I’ll add you and your family to my prayer list. When you’re losing someone you love, it may not be best to talk to them about how they are screwing up and how they’ve hurt you (I’m not saying that i the road you would take. Just a little advice). You may tell your brother something to the effect of “Hey, I miss you. We used to be close. I don’t care about the specifics of how we got here. I just want you back. We want you back. We love you. And we miss you. Please. It hurts not having you around.”

Tell him how much you love him, why it hurts you and your family that he’s not around. Focus on the fact that you love him and miss him and how things used to be. Don’t say a word about his wife. When the conversation ends just tell him that you hope that you’ll see him soon. And then pray that the Holy Spirt, that quiet voice of knowledge, helps him to see what the problem is. Pray that he sees the variable in his life that has thrown his constant out of whack. Pray that he has the strength to act upon the influence of the Spirit. And pray even harder for his wife. That’s just my advice. Take what you will. God bless you and your family. We’ll be praying for you. And don’t forget to pray for yourself.

Being married to a Pentacostal is pretty rough for a Catholic family. They believe all Catholics are doomed. They of course are trying to save us from damnation, a noble deed when you think about it.

The tough part is trying to convince them that we are already saved, and don’t need their help. Pray for them and prove to them that we are as Christ-like or more Christ-like than they are, Try to be as loving and understanding as you possibly can be. Be charitable, and kind. Return insults with blessings. Forgive slights and misunderstandings. Welcome them as you would all of your family. Keep the lines of communication open.

A side note for your consideration. *I don’t want to derail this thread.
*
She is in AA and a Pentacostal.
Please don’t equate these two. There are plenty of faithful Catholics in AA. It’s my belief that those AAs who leave the Church have been poorly catechized, and/or are getting better or more support from Non-Catholics than they are getting from Catholics.

I repeat, *I don’t want to derail this thread.

*I think the best advice given so far is WCKnight’s.
