If you have, I would like to hear your comments. What did you like? Dislike?

Dear W&W,
Yes, a few years back I attended a charismatic catholic church - mainly at the request of my sister who is a parishioner there.

The people were friendly enough. However, I was honestly taken back by the speaking in tongues from both the parishioners and the priest during the Mass. There were a few tamborines jiggling along with the music too. I had the feeling that it was a stage production.

Following services, I asked the priest, who spoke in tongues, if he knew what he was saying. He replied with an air of arrogance that he spoke as he was inspired and that only those likewise inspired by the Holy Spirit could interpret what he was saying (guess I wasn’t one of them).

Another thing that upset me was that the priest sat in a chair next to the altar while only the laity distributed communion.

Would I ever attend this church again - nope! Are all charismatic churches alike - I don’t know. As with all the Catholic churches, some are managed better than others. If you plan on attending services at one, listen to your heart and to what God tells you.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut, Polish. There is a charismatic parish about 2 hours from here, but I know nothing about it. It’s too far away to attend regularly.

Has anyone had a positive experience?

The priest was right. Those speak in tongues do not know what they were speaking. There are different gifts from the Holy Spirit, one gift is speaking in tongue, another gift is to interprete the tongue. See 1 Corinthians 13:27-31. Different people may have different spiritual gifts. The priest was telling the truth. He might not be arrogant.

I don’t like them. Generally speaking, charismatic is only about speaking in tongues and while I believe in the gift of being able to speak in a foreign language that you have never spoken before (a real language), the so-called tongues which is gibberish in my opinion is fake. The people who purport to speak in this gibberish tongues I find them condescending and was told by one of their group leaders that nobody can communicate with the Holy Spirit if they can’t speak in tongues. What arrogance!

In this area, there are Charismatic groups that at times have healing Masses Etc, but don’t have their own church. They belong to a regular parish. They will have a regular day when they attend Mass as a group. They have Charismatic Retreats also. They came to our parish on one occasion and the Mass was very well attended, very reverent, and I thought it was a great experience. If I could fit it into my schedule, I would like to attend more Masses with these folks.👍

Interesting experiences. I’ll just have to go try one out and see for myself. Thanks, folks.

Thistle,

With regard to not being able to communicate with the Holy Spirit, whomever told you that was just plain wrong… What an ignorant thing to say. He’s God… He can communicate anyway He wishes. Whether in divers kinds of tongues or in your vernacular. We aren’t to judge whether it’s fake or real. The person speaking will have to face God regarding if they were “faking it” or not.

Love in Christ,
Sher:o
