Pope John Paul II (the Great) (the Saint) opened his papacy with a message on “Be Not Afraid”. He returned to theme frequently.

Recommended: Read the three volume series of books of the life of Pope John Paul II by papal biographer, George Weigel. The first book is: Witness to Hope.
Yes, I have read those about 10 years ago. or at least the first two and not the third yet. Very good to see how saints deal with adversity and how JP2’s message drives out fear.

Wow. That was a quick reply. Nice.

The best fear is the fear of God. When our lives are over and judgment comes, we will not regret the times when we overcame fear and gave witness for the causes of beauty, morality, truth, love, Christ, the building of the Kingdom of God.

As you may know, the third book is Weigel’s: Lessons in Hope. I found it to be “revealing”.

I read books by people who personally overcame great adversity.

After a while … a few years … of reading these "memoirs … I found myself less fearful.

At one point I ALSO started taking flying lessons.

Confidence and courage are gradually greatly enhanced.

How about. Matthew 16
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Mark 8
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save …

And keep reading:

Romans 6
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with

Galatians 2
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

What does it mean to “lose one’s life for my sake”?

To be buried and crucified?

One word, EGO.

When I was in business I sometimes had to fire someone. I hated firing anyone even though it needed to be done to help keep my business afloat and secure the jobs of others. So being a complete coward, at that time I wasn’t a Catholic, I decided to ask someone else to fire them for the reasons which I gave. That may seem like a bad idea but it wasn’t. Firstly the person who actually fired them felt little or no guilt over it because they were acting on my behalf and so couldn’t be blamed and I experienced very little stress over it because I’d used a third party. The third party idea is a good one and works very well in many circumstances.

Back to the point, we are a third party if God is the main instigator and we simply follow the tenets of the Catholic faith when we act or respond to life. God is our shield and comfort in that case and our own little selves take the back seat. My former posts on this thread describe a little better what I’m suggesting.

Be fearless, you are a servant of God are you not?
