I’ve committed a dirty sin, and as much as I want a “new beginning”, i’m scared to confess it to my priest (yes, he knows who i am…), especially because I am still young and feel like I’m the only who has gone through this (yes…masturbation…I didn’t even really know what it was…and was terrified to know I commited a mortal sin). Has anyone every been extremely scared/embarrassed to confess a sin? Any advice?

Thanks

Yes–more than once. I thank our Lord that I have surpassed my embarrassment and gone to confession.

You may want to consider if this will help you–going to different priest and/or using a confessional with a screen (where you are not actually face to face).

Ummmmm- YES!!! I once had to grab the parish priest 15 minutes before Mass and beg him to hear my confession because I’d committed the sin of masturbation (before the good Lord helped me overcome the habit), and was scheduled to be Lector that day. I wasn’t sure if I was able to perform my duties with mortal sin on my soul, and so not only did I have to ask him to hear my confession, I had to do it face-to-face (the screen at that parish was moveable and put away during non-scheduled Confessions).

It got to the point where contemplating the humiliation of having to say the word “masturbate” to my priest was enough to help me overcome the temptation to do it.

My advice? Force yourself to go to Confession, and ask Our Lord to help you apply that humiliation to the purification of your soul from attachment to the sin.

But you’re not alone on this one, brother. Trust me, on this one, you’re not alone.

Haha, thats what I’m most scared of…I kept practicing trying to reword it…but I don’t want to confuse the priest more (and I want to be honest)…so I’m just gonna have to face it. Thank you for both your stories…they’ve helped.

Yes, they are helpful stories. When there is something that would embarass me, and especially if I know the priest knows who I am, I force myself to confess it first. Sometines forcing yourself to confess something embarrasing first can help you give it up.

We’ve all beeen embarrassed to confess sins–especially that one.

What makes it worse is when you hear a priest give a homily complaining about people confessing the same sin over and over.

Addiction is a hard thing to overcome. But if it weren’t for the shame we put ourselves–and each other–in over common sins like this, we could talk more openly about them and help each other overcome them. It’s like we’re a bunch of Arthur Dimmesdales.

I’ve had a similar experience to the one above.

We were travelling on Aug. 2, and I’d “fallen off the wagon.” I wanted to go to confession so I could try to get the Portiuncula Indulgence.

It was a Traditional Latin Mass at a parish we’d never visited before. When the priest greeted me outside church, I begged him to hear my confession. He took me into his office, and heard my confession, face to face, standing up, with me rushing so he could continue to get ready for mass.

“This was a good confession,” he said (always a reassuring statement, esp. under those circumstances)!

So, don’t be afraid!

What’s really embarrassing is when you go to a deaf priest, and he yells, “YOU DID WHAT???” when he can’t hear you!

I was terribly afraid to confess the same sin at one point, I did simply say that I had, “touched myself in an impure manner” rather than say “masturbate”. 😛 I was just glad I had confessed in the end, and the priest wasn’t shocked or any such thing, and in fact simply offered advice on how to avoid the sin, which if I may add was to try to keep myself occupied with other things so as not to give myself the chance to dwell on impure thoughts and quite likely give in to them.

just turn the question around…is there ANY sin you’re proud to admit??? Every single one of us has been/will be embarassed, ashamed, mortified for a whole variety of transgressions and shortcomings. WELCOME to the red-faced club!! :o

You should never be scared to confess your sins to a priest no matter how dirty the sins are you committed. If it makes you more comfortable, go to a priest that doesn’t know you (from a different parish, chaplain, etc.). May God give you strength.

God Bless!

My dear, please make sure you tell your priest what I have highlighted here. It is practically impossible to commit a mortal sin if you don’t know it’s a mortal sin! Tell the priest exactly what you said here!

God bless you!

Heck yes. We all have sins that are embarassing to mention. I plan to generalize my sins, when I finally return to confession. ‘Impure sexual thoughts’ will be the rubric I’ll probably use to cover lust. ‘Uncharitable thoughts about my neighbor’ will cover the sin of social hostility, etc., etc.

Does that count or do you have to be (semi)detailed? I’ve never been to confession for something like this (it’s usually lying, loosing my temper, etc.) so I’m not sure. 😛

Priests know what you are talking about when you refer to this sin by saying, “I was impure with myself.” “Impurity” is the traditional term for masturbation. If it’s a “word” issue that is keeping you out of the confessional, I’d use this approach.

That having been said, you are never going to have confession without shame. It’s intrinsic to the sacrament. You are approaching a Holy God who is all pure, all loving, all giving, and you are bearing your faults and evil choices. Don’t focus on the shame you feel in confession, focus on the fact that you are owning up to this shame before your eternal judgement.

Mercy is available now. At death, our fate is sealed.

Your instincts about being (semi-) detailed in confession are good. Don’t be so vague that the priest doesn’t know what your talking about. I wouldn’t say “I sinned against charity” to mean, “I got angry to the point of swearing, I assisted in my girlfriend’s abortion, and I beat up a classmate.” Common sense should prevail here.

First of all, i strongly urge you to nip this one in the bud before it becomes all-consuming. Masturbation is a horrendously hard habit to break, and you don’t want to be struggling with it for years.

In any case, the better the confession is, the better you feel afterwards. Here’s a particularily good “examination of conscience” – basically a list of a huge amount of sins you may need to confess. Going through it may help you see things you didnt even know you should confess, it will help you word your confession when you don’t quite know how to say it (a big factor when it comes to sins of impurity).

These are some very good ones.

A good examination, but this one is great because of the biblical texts it gives you to read before confession to put you int he right state of mind, and because it gives a simple walk-through of confession, and what to expect. All-in-all, great for first-timers or those who have been away from the confessional for a long time.

Other good ones; each list is a little different. Its good to read over a few because some may be more specific in certain areas. Find one you especially like, or make one of your own using these lists.

Confessing using the actual word got me scared out of the habit. Just say what you did; they’ve heard it a billion times before.

thanks everyone, I’ll keep your advice in mind. (i’m still scared…haha. Confession is saturday)

Thanks!
