Spoken,

Do you know that up until the time of Constantine (when the Church we tolerated) there was no active evangelization. We do see Paul and the Apostles doing it in Acts and the epistles (but not as you think they did it), but when extreme persecution started this stopped.

You ever see those nifty little fishes on the back of peoples cars? Do you have one on yours? Well that came about because Christians could not publically identify themselves. They would go up to each other and one would draw one side of the fish and the other person would draw the other. In so doing they would recognize eachother as Christ followers.

Also, with active persecution there was a long waiting period for those interested in becoming followers of Christ, sometimes up to 3 years! This was to make sure that those who were interested were serious and not spies, and to be serious meant that you were willing to give your life.

The relationship method CM is talking is about is the only true method of real evangelization. It gives the person true worth because you are not just interested in “saving” them but truely loving them and being their friend. To evangelize is a life long process as Paul and the other Apostles taught us. It takes time and prayer and should never be done rashly or without proper training and insight.

Peace
Hi Dennis, I dont have any fishy,s on my car. 😃 I actually go out and do the fishing. Jesus said He would make us fishers of men. I do agree it requires proper training. We do need the proper tools. 👍 God Bless

Do you know that in spite of the lack of active evangelization in the first 300 years of Christianity, the faith grow 30% a decade!

This is do to the fact that people lived it and were will to die for it!

Your method see people as means to an end or just a notch in your bible belt.

People need to know what they are getting into before they decide to make a major life decision. No wonder the average fall off rate in the type of evangelization you propose is 90%. This is not evangelization, this is setting people up for a fall. Not what our Lord would want us to do.

Y’know DK,
I was just thinkin’ the very same thing. If the Holy Spirit wasn’t in it then there would be no fruit right? So since there has been fruit…I guess that lays that silly question to rest.

Besides the OP (since it was mine anyway) was"Have you ever been “witnessed to”?’, not have you ever witnessed TO someone else like SW seems to wanna discuss.

For Catholics, there is another whole thread for that discussion so this one is no longer hijacked.
Pax vobiscum,

.Lets look to Jesus for that answer. Lets take a look at the women at the well, or the adultious women. How much time did Jesus spend to witness to them?
How much time did he spend and how would we know since the gospels do not record everything?

I have a counter question. How much time did he spend witnessing Simon (Cephas) before his great profession of faith, more than 30 minutes or less?

  1. A nominal Catholic from junior high called during college.
  2. Evangelical-Fundamentalist, but I didn’t know that at the time.
  3. Ummm, my soul no, hers yes.
  4. Yes, and said everything Biblical should be taken literally.
  5. I wasn’t very active at the time. I just said “the bible tells me how to treat my slave. Should I own a slave then?” She actually said maybe I should.
  6. Yep, with love and understanding to those I have a relationship with already. They don’t mind. They all say they love to hear it because my goal is to share common ground not to convert.
  7. Also with love and understanding. The only ones who tend to attack the Catholic Faith around me are people who haven’t gotten to know me.

Hi all!

Catholics think that they get hassled/“witnessed” at by fundamentalist Protestant missionaries?

Try walking around in the USA with a beard and a kipa (i.e. yarmulke; the former is the Hebrew word, the latter Yiddish) on, thus identifying yourself as an orthodox Jew.

I’ve found that a polite, “No thank you; I’m not interested,” will usually do the trick.

Be well!

I’ve found that answering the door butt-naked with lime jello smeared all over me works pretty well too.

Hi all!

Scott, you posted:

:rotfl: 👍

Way back in the spring of 1986, when I was living in Arlington, Va. and before my movie theater epiphany, when I decided to become religiously observant (i.e. orthodox) and admit God into my life, I was heading toward the Metro station at Virginia Square from the nearby supermarket, when I was witnessed at. There was two or three (I don’t remember) young people there. I was 23 at the time & they looked about my age. I didn’t wear a kipa in those days & I certainly didn’t have a beard & they couldn’t have known that I was Jewish. But I told them that I wasn’t interested because I was Jewish. Well that certainly piqued their curiosity & one of the missionaries did her level best to come on to me, (although not in the sense that I hoped at the time). She was one of the most stunningly beautiful women I have ever seen. I stayed & talked with her a good while simply because she was so attractive.

Now I wonder if I had suggested a romp in the buff with lime jello…😉

Be well!

Oh yeah! I work with a couple Jehovah’s Witnesses. The first thing that happened was a challenge to traditional teachings. The first question was,“Do you believe that hell is a real place?”

“Jehovah God wouldn’t make such a place because He is not so cruel!” was the argument.

A little later we were discussing whether or not the Jews were damned. I used the argument that if someone dedicates his/her life to worshipping God, like a rabbi for instance, then God wouldn’t be so cruel as to damn that person.

It was the same argument as the “hell” one the JW used on me. Sent him for a loop!

But, it is important to keep in mind that these people are seeking God as we are. They are doing it the way they were taught to, like us. Treat them with christian charity, be the example.

God bless,
Jerry

Yes.
  1. Roman Catholics, Evangelical Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, secular humanists
  2. Mostly done to make themselves feel that they did something “noble” for God, fulfill a religious obligation, or to win someone over to their point of view.
  3. Everyone but the Roman Catholics did. The Roman Catholics attacked everyone else.
  4. Listened. Threw in my own zingers here and there.
  5. Why, of course. I usually don’t start the “conversations” though.
  6. Played devil’s advocate with the Roman Catholics. Passionately defended the Catholic faith with the others.

Hi Dennis, I know because He told me.If you obey me you love me. The command is to go and preach the good news . Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God[romans 10;17] How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things.[romans 10;15] 👍 God Bless

SW,
That obedience is not limited to the great commission It applies to all that He commmanded…and theer are many things. You also just made it very plain that you believe that works have some part in our salvation since faith sharing is a work in response to His commands.

My own experience is that most n-Cs I know are so hung up on their “witnessing for the Lord” that they completely forget things like Matthew 25:31-46
"31 And when the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty. 32 And all nations shall be gathered together before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. 34 Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in:

36 Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. 37 Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, and fed thee; thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 And when did we see thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and covered thee? 39 Or when did we see thee sick or in prison, and came to thee? 40 And the king answering, shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.

41 Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry, and you gave me not to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me not to drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you covered me not: sick and in prison, and you did not visit me. 44 Then they also shall answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee? 45 Then he shall answer them, saying: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it not to one of these least, neither did you do it to me.

46 And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting. "
Pax vobiscum,

Yes, I used to be on a regular basis by a fellow I was working with at the time. Nice guy, polite and very well spoken.

Eventually I had to sit him down and explain that should I choose to convert (I am Jewish) based on my background and personal philosophy (I grew up in a largely Catholic neighborhood and attended a Catholic high school and absolutely reject any sort of pre-destination) that I would probably become Catholic.

He almost immediately backed off. I got the impression that he’d rather I remain a Jew than become Catholic.

Of course I believe faith without works is dead. I do works because I love Him and they are the fruit of my salvation. My works will be judged and I will recieve my rewards in the kingdom. 👍 God Bless
