Have you ever delivered roses for St. Therese? It happened to me twice.
The first time was 30 years ago, before I even knew anything about St. Therese. I walked through the rectory garden, on my way to visit my friends who worked in the office. Roses were blooming, and I picked one. When I got into the office, a young woman was there, and she looked a bit unhappy. I gave her my rose, saying, “You need this more than I do.” She was ecstatic! She had been praying to St. Therese and was thrilled to receive a rose. Sadly, the modern nun who was there told her it was nothing but a superstition, but I don’t think she was swayed. Ironically, Sister’s name was Rose.
The second time was last week. I just started working in a flower shop. On Friday, one of the designers gave me a bunch of roses that were too far open to be sold. I was on my way to daily Mass, and I had decided that if the sacristan that I know was on duty, I would give her the roses to put into a vase and place near the altar. She was not on duty, so I went to Plan B. I asked our Lord to show me who should get the roses among the people at Mass. I decided on one lady, but she got away before I could give them to her. So I gave them to another lady who is always friendly to me. I saw her the next day, and she asked me if I had a “reverence for St. Therese.” I said yes, and she told me she had been praying and asking for roses! She gave me a lovely prayer card of St. Therese. It was a wonderful faith-booster for me.
How about you - any stories of carrying the rose?
