Yeah, I used to be a muslim and I fasted during Ramadan. It had a profound impact on my life. It reduced my sexual desires, which made it easier for me to be chaste (I’m not married).

i would say that the fasting i did when i was younger & capable of doing such a thing brought me great spiritual benefit

Certainly! Back when I was able to, I fasted to an extreme. I ate nothing on Friday. I wanted to feel Christ’s hunger and I did. All of that has changed, but fasting and prayer, as our Lord teaches us, has great spiritual advantages.

It is the first step in following Christ, although few seem to believe it these days.
“If anyone would come after me, let him first deny himself, take up his cross, then come, follow me.” Luke 9:23

Why do we reverse that order?

Yes, I have gone through periods where I manage to fast pretty regularly. I am a vegetarian which simplifies things up to a point. I have found it to be very helpful. But other times I struggle very hard with it and give it up. I do this when I am getting so obsessed with doing it I begin to doubt whether it is doing more good than harm. It can seem like it’s not doing much more than causing stress and distracting me. It is not about laws, practices, ritual, diet, etc. Fasting is just as subject to misuse as any other religious practice in my opinion. I have a met a few really good fasters who frankly are not that great at being Christians. I have not found a strict correlation there. Fasting is about freeing you from material or physical dependency, the self - turning to God. To the extent that it brings you closer to God, great.

Jimmy Akin has a wonderful post on intermittent fasting on his website where he goes into detail, and, which made me try it.
Fasting is supposed to ramp up your immune system big-time. I did it once for 5 days. I feel a need to do it again soon, but it’s tough for a food-lover like me!

That means that if you are going to do some intense fasting (for instance, no food at all only water or over a long period of time), speak to your doctor first.

No.

Being hypoglycemic, I am unable to fast for a whole day.
