Have you ever had the priest tell you that you don't have to go to confession every day or every week?

Have you ever had a priest tell you that you didn’t have to go to confession every day or every week?
That you are dwelling to much on sinning?

I have had a priest tell me that I am too focused on what is and isn’t a sin. Going to confession too much is scrupulousness, which is not good. You need to find a balance, God wants you to live your life and that means going to confession when you sin, but not every single day. I try go every other week and at the bare minimum once a month.

Yes, he scoffed at the idea that someone would set such a schedule. I agree with him. How does one commit mortal sin daily AND confess it daily? I suppose short term, but something might be amiss if it goes on longer than that. Confession should be when you need it. I can see going on a somewhat regular basis (every month or two). More than that should be under spiritual direction.

If one goes to confession daily or weekly, because they are committing that many mortal sins, are they really seeking forgiveness and honestly trying to change their behavior in order not to sin?

If one is not honestly trying to change their behavior have they done what is needed for absolution or are they just going through the motions?

I’ve been told saints went to confession every week. I think the more often you go to confession, the more you have to reflect on venial sins, instead of just mortal sins. That combined with grace you get from going to confession helps us become better people. I think this is especially true when it comes to confessing failures to practice virtue, rather than just fallings to vice.

Would you rather they didn’t come at all?

When people confess habitual sins I always tell them to keep coming back - it doesn’t matter if they’re there same time next week, thanks be to God for a sinner who knows their need of the Lord’s mercy.

Serious habitual sins aside, confessing every day or even every week is probably excessive and may even be a sign of scrupulosity. Yes, we are all sinners, and yes, we are all in need of the Lord’s mercy. At the same time, we are also His beloved children - nothing can separate us from His love.
