At a recent First Holy Communion liturgy, the church was packed with people from around the city…when it was time for the reception of Holy Communion, many people approached me ( a Eucharistic minister) mostly children, young teens…who I stopped and asked of them a question when they did not present themselves knowing how to receive Communion. I asked…Have you already made your First Holy Communion? and when they replied no…I told them, I could not give them the Body of Christ at this time. I have never had to do that before…but I felt like I was obliged to protect the sanctity of the Eucharist. Was I OK in doing it this way? Our current pastor is difficult to approach because he is very liberal in his ways, but my conscience would not allow me to do give it indiscriminately?

Yes, you were justified, and correct, to do what I did. I had to do the same thing at a first communion last weekend.

It’s pretty comon at First Communions for people to approach not knowing what to do, not having received communion in who knows how long, not even being Catholic. It isn’t unusual for a priest or EM to have to say things like:

“Are you Catholic?”
“Say Amen.”
“Stick out your tongue.”

Thanks, I thought I was losing my mind for a minute there when I had to do that.
