Holy God We Praise Thy Name
is much abused, but it is a very stirring traditional hymn.
It doesn’t work for me unless we sing about 3 stanzas, at least.
I hate the whole modern concept that music is just functional and fills in the gaps. That is just a lie to begin with, as far as I’m concerned.
I love to hear the choirs of the Vatican. They are superbly trained. I don’t always know what they’re singing.
I like the entire Messiah by GF Handel. I have the version of the choir of St. Martin in the Field, conducted by Neville Mariner (?).
It has the full richness of all the major voices and choirs. And, therein, I like all the songs. The Hallelujah Chorus does not stand out to me, because the other songs / hymns are too powerful.
“I know that my Redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the later day upon the earth.”
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain [and hath redeemed us by His blood] to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory.” (or whatever the verse is)
