Have you ever modified the rosary for any other prayers?

Has anyone modified the rosary by using it to recite a one of the Psalms?

I thought about using the Jesus Prayer on the ten beads.

Jesus Prayer goes like this

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

What do you all think?
 
Well, the Divine Mercy chaplet does use the rosary–I’m not sure, but I think any prayer with “chaplet” in the name might, since chapelet is the French word for rosary (something similar in the other Romance languages, I believe).

No not all that many chaplets do use the Rosary beads. Three of my favourites, the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, the Chaplet of the Infant of Prague, and the Chaplet of St Joseph, don’t.

I’ve used my beads to keep track of repetitions of St Faustina’s prayer (‘Jesus I trust in you’), the Jesus prayer, a few different aspirations to the Sacred Heart … they’re useful that way.

this is not a modification of the rosary, it is another ancient prayer practice which is perfectly legitimate and worthy, with or without beads. Many Eastern Christian pray this way and this prayer may be even older than the rosary. Beads or knotted cords were used for prayer long before the rosary as we know it know developed.

in private prayer you can use devotional aids and sacramentals any way that helps you, and can choose any formal or spontaneous prayer that helps you, as long as you are praying with the mind and heart of the Church.

I have not used it as a memory aid (or something like that) to recite a single Psalm, but I used my rosary for the Prayer of the Heart many times, long ago. I love the Jesus Prayer.

I would also reserve the large beads for the Doxology. I would start by reciting the Creed and finish off with an Act of Contrition. 🙂

I have also reversed the common order of a rosary, with the ‘Our Father’ on the ten beads and the ‘Hail Mary’ on the large beads (interestingly, it makes the ‘Hail Mary’ seem even more special to me). It is my understanding that this practice is closer to how the rosary originated in the early Middle Ages, with 150 Our Fathers representing the 150 Psalms monastics would recite.

I have also prayed the Jesus Prayer on a set of Franciscan Penance beads (very convenient small set of beads for discreet prayer). I like the Chaplet of St Patrick, which is doxologies all the way around.

I encourage people to feel comfortable developing a prayer rule that works for them.

I will substitue the name of a specific person for the words “us sinners.” For example, one year I prayed specifically for my son, and substituted his name. This year, I decided to pray each month for a public figure, in the hopes that they will be converted and will convert others. This month, I’m praying for Stephen Colbert. Others I’m considering are Ted Kennedy, Jimmy Kimmel, Sma Harris, Anne Druyan and Mike Tyson.

Again, my idea is that a public figure who is popular/well-respected, and either pokes fun at Christianity/belief in God, or is amoral, could lead countless others to Christ if they would convert.

It would be kinda neat (and perhaps more powerful) if we could all agree on a particular person to pray for, and all of us pray for them for one month. If anyone’s interested, let me know.

I’m not looking for something instantaneous here (St. Augustine’s mother prayed for him for 20-30 years before he was converted, and we all know what wonderful things came from his conversion.)

I don’t modify it necessarily…BUT…over the past few months, I’ve added before each decade…'Mary, Mother of God…please pray for me for…(and I list my request…or give thanksgiving, or state my sins)…I feel like I’m praying each decade for specific causes, sins, people…I have found the Rosary to have new meaning for me, following this.

It’s actually fairly common practice to say the Jesus Prayer on a rosary.

Also, “Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.”

A lot of times if I have an intention, I will pray the first half of the Hail Mary (up to “Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus”) This is in addition to, not instead of, praying the actual rosary.

And often, the first line, or the first two lines of the Prayer to St. Michael.

It’s a strand of beads. It’s your strand of beads. Say whatever prayers you want to on it.

Just promise me you won’t chant “nam yo ho ren ge kyo” on it.

Also, you can find some good ‘chotkis’ on here, although you can find them cheaper elsewhere. The woman that does these was a poster on the www.byzcath.org, and had a real burden to start making them. She does some awesome work on Rosaries also.

Those chotkis are absolutely stunning. I already have numerous rosaries though, so I’m limiting my rosary and chotki-related purchases for the moment :o

Great, Cheeto1. Like I said, this month I chose Stephen Colbert. For March, how about praying the rosary for the conversion of Dawkins (the author of “The God Delusion”)? He’s getting a lot of airplay, and negatively influencing a lot of people.

My coworkers include a Jehovah’s Witness, who I dearly love, two avowed pagans, and a Feng Shui master who was doing weird blessing things with an orange peel and a red bowl filled with water last night…

And they think I’m weird because I’m Catholic.

Were you addressing your question to me, or to everyone here in general? If to me (regarding my comment about praying for specific public figures) I don’t know how to accomplish it due to time constraints (for me, at least). I mean, what I do is replace EVERY “for us sinners” with “for Stephen Colbert”. Therefore I don’t see how I could add several names for every replacement. Perhaps at the beginning of the rosary I could add your friends names as intentions as well.

If you’re addressing your question in regards to the subject of the thread “Have you ever modified…” then as for my reply, yes, I have prayed for individuals (my son, etc.) in the same way as mentioned above.
 
I have a book on the rosary and it says Pope John Paul suggests at the end of each mystery you say a personal prayer reflecting on the spiritual intent of the mystery instead of the “Oh my Jesus, I am sorry for my sins” prayer. I don’t replace that prayer, but sometimes I add on a personal prayer.

Also, when I am prayer the Joyful Mysteries, I say a little prayer on the Visitation, the one Mary recited to Elizabeth “My soul proclaims the greatness of God, my spirit rejoices in the Lord my savior.”

I was thinking replacing “us sinners” with the name of a JW or Pagan coworker. Then move on to the non-religious types. Get everyone all Catholic.

Heck, I probably should start with my mom, who lives with me, and is into the religion formerly known as Eck. She’d have a fit if she came into the room and heard that, though.

Instead of? I can’t believe that of JP2 - he was absolutely devoted to Our Lady of Fatima, who herself taught the child seers that very prayer.
