In my opinion, Dr. Hahn is a very smart man and a good writer. The thing is, he really has a kind of “cult following”, who make him out to be another Cardinal Newman or another G.K. Chesterton. Hence I’m sure that many people read his book(s) with super-high expectations and come away disappointed – kind of like if you went to a Justin Timberlake concert expecting him to be another Frank Sinatra.

I have seen Dr. Hahn speak at several Coming Home Network conferences. He is an excellent speaker. I have read a couple of his books, and they are well written. As a convert to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church I can’t identify with his conversion story, for I wasn’t anti-Catholic.

My comments about non-Catholic Christians would be the same as when I was outside the Church as a non-Catholic Christian. If another Christian claims:

• to be both a Christian AND a Muslim
• that abortion is compatible with Christianity
• that euthanasia is compatible with Christianity
• that infanticide is compatible with Christianity
• that homosexual behavior is compatible with Christianity
• that sex outside of marriage is compatible with Christianity
• that serial polygamy (divorce->remarriage - lather, rinse, repeat) is compatible with Christianity
• etc.

I’m going to call them on it. It is not charitable to confirm someone in their sin with silence.

The Protestant denomination I was in became extremely heterodox on life issues. That led me to investigate all Protestant denominations. I had no idea that the contradictory cacophony of Protestant doctrines would lead me to Catholicism.

I guess for me the bottom line is that Professor Hahn is a very good thinker, writer and speaker, but there are also a great many other Catholic professors who are very good thinkers, writers and speakers – a fact that seems to be lost on all those Hahn-aholics out there.

… have become un-Christian towards the faith they were originally from? I’ve met converts to the Roman Catholic Church and they are filled with zeal for their new found faith, but they don’t always seem to speak in a Christian manner towards the church they came from?

   Example:  I heard a Roman Catholic deacon(ex-Lutheran) railing AGAINST Lutherans from the altar in my church.  I was very embarrassed by his venom.  Certain things shouldn't be said from the altar.

    Banner put outside the Catholic Church:  "Don't listen to your neighbors!  Come in and find out about the Truth for yourself".  Another divisive example.  Unnecessary and antagonistic.

   I am happy that the Holy Spirit has led them home.  But that does not give them license to denounce other Christian faiths.

I think that in some (perhaps many) cases, the enthusiasm of converts about their new-found faith can go too far, even, in some cases, of inappropriate speech or conduct toward their former coreligionists. However, in my opinion (and personal experience) far more badmouthing, shunning, personal attacks, etc. come AGAINST Catholic converts FROM their former coreligionists, and from former Catholics who have become anti-Catholic polemicists.

Yeah… he’s ok. (yes, we’re both vying for understatement of the century)

Anyway, while I’ll still debate and discuss intra-Anglican and Catholic-Anglican issues, I certainly try not to disparage Anglicans or the many wonderful things within Anglicanism that I still love, even as a Catholic.

I’m grateful for all I learned and experienced as an Episcopalian prior to coming into full communion with the Catholic Church. (and I’ll continue to try to point out to my co-religionists that not all Episcopalians/Anglicans are as wacky as the predominant TEC hierarchy)

That is very true. I read Rome Sweet Home, and that is the only book by Scott Hahn I’ve ever read the whole way through. (I started to read The Lamb’s Supper, but didn’t really get into it.) I know what some people say about the straw man with Calvinism, though I will say in his defense, he and his wife wrote the book to chronicle their conversion, not to present arguments for or against Calvinism.

I have nothing against him though. But I agree with another poster who prefers Chesterton. I read Orthodoxy last year, and it was an excellent read. And actually very funny at times! I do agree though, that some people can be pretty rabid fans of Scott Hahn, but there’s nothing wrong with that. To each his own.
