Have you had problems recieving on the Tongue?

In another thread a Poster said:

“I have received both on the tongue and in the hand, and I have experienced so many problems with EMsHC being unwilling to put the host on my tongue that I went back to in the hand.”

I have only run into this once, is this a common problem?

I have experienced this many times but I have not gone back to receiving on the hand. My daughter sometimes is not even given Our Lord but she has never done it any other way.

I have been forced to receive in the hand. That was just awkward for both me and the EMHC but I think more so for him.
 
While I have never had an EMHC *refuse *to place the Holy Eucharist on my tongue, I have had a few who had some difficulty – one actually tossed it into my mouth.

And, yes, I DO stick my tongue out far enough to receive.

I’ve noticed that more and more people at my parish are receiving on the tongue, so the EMHCs are becoming more adept.

Well in our current Church the only hands touching the host are the Priests…so we do not use EMHC’s or whatever they are called. In turn recievieng on the tongue is not an issue.

Never from a Eucharistic Minister.
Some priests, without refusing communion on the tongue, subtly make clear that they disapprove, by the way they administer the host.
 
I only receive on the tongue if I’m holding my baby, but I’ve never had any problems. I do notice that the eucharistic ministers are not always proficient with distribution via tongue - probably b/c not a lot of people in the parish receive on the tongue.

But it’s not really an issue.
 
Am I correct in my thinking that receiving on the Tongue is in no way outlawed or not recommended by Rome.

As I understand it, this poll would be in reverse in Rome,

“Have you ever been refused the Host in the Hand?”

Help me out!
 
I’ve had Priests refuse to give me Holy Communion at all, I’ve had several refuse to distribute on the tongue and in one bizarre incident I had one Priest flick the Host into my mouth like he was flicking dust off of his fingers. After Mass he told me pointedly that I was setting a very bad example by receiving on the tongue when the majority of people received in the hand. I told him that he set a pretty bad example by not genuflecting in front of the Tabernacle when the Body of Christ was there. I was then told that perhaps I needed to find another church, one more in line with Pre Vatican II thinking and customs.

So yeah, you could say I’ve definitely had problems with the receiving on the tongue.

(I didn’t vote because we don’t have EMHC’S)
 
Wow, the worst problems I’ve ever had w/ receiving on the tongue is when visiting another parish where everyone receives standing up (my parish still uses the altar rail, and most everyone kneels except those who are too infirm–but the priests and deacons are also a step higher which prevents the problem I’m about to mention). That problem is when there’s a really short (my own height or less) EMHC … it’s just really awkward. However, given the infirmity in my right hand (nerve damage), I just don’t feel ok about receiving in the hand … the slightest lapse of attention to the fact that I’m holding something invariably ends with whatever it is being dropped.

Sorry you were treated like that! I hope I am never confronted with such shameful behavior by a Priest! Shocking that he would treat Our Lord in such an irreverent manner. That really blows me away.
 
After I started going to the monthly Classical Latin Mass in my city I decided to only recieve on the tongue, from the priest. When I went for Communion in my parish I opened my mouth and Father (who knows me) gave me an odd stare and a blessing instead. After Mass I went to him to ask why and I was told that he only gives Communion on the tongue to the old folks who wont have it any other way and that I, as a young man, should recieve like most other people.

So now I only recieve at the TLM.
 
I’ve not been flatly refused but I have EMHC’s get flustered and I end up taking it in the hand because they look like they don’t know what else to do with it. I also had a nervous EMHC drop the host (to my horror) while trying to place it on my tongue. For a long time after that I only recieved in my hand at that particular parish. I’d rather the host be in my hand then on the floor.(At my home parish -90% recieve on the tongue. so no problems there.)
 
We mostly go to a Tridentine Mass - no problems there of course. We also sometimes attend our local NO Mass. After some distasteful looks from EM’s we now make sure we are always on the priest’s line. He has no problem with anyone in his parish receiving on the tongue, although not many do. Also we like the children to receive a blessing, which of course we need to be on the priests line to receive. The FSSP priests bless the children with the Host before placing it on the parent’s tongue - has anyone else seen this? It is so lovely! 🙂
 
No, never a problem receiving on the tongue. I’m not sure why it would be??? I’ve seen many parents holding infants receive on the tongue, when they would normally receive in the hand … so it’s not like receiving on the tongue is only something that “radicals” do. 😉

That is so shocking to me, that a priest would speak to you like that!
I voted no on the post, but after reading these posts I think perhaps
I just wasn’t aware and assumed the person giving me the host was just awkward. I’ve had the person I sometimes attend mass with repeatly question why I won’t receive in the hand. When I told them various reasons(I heard receiving in the hand was started by reformers, to show there is nothing special about the Host, and I feel it’s more reverant) I was told I’d give a “holy than thou” impression and other things of that nature.
One time, before I started receiving in the mouth, I had a priest try to not give me the Host. I just stood there til he did, and never spoke to him about it(I should have).

Recieving on the tongue is the universal norm, it cannot be outlawed.

There are some circumstance where a person can be forbidden to recieve in the hand.

First of all, recieving in the hand depends on the approval of the local bishop’s synod and the subsequent approval by Rome. There are quite a number of countries where the local bishop’s synod had chosen to not implement this practice

(Mexico is one of those, so if you go to a Mass in Mexico, the priest may certainly refuse to give you Communion in the Hand)

Secondly, if the Eucharist is intinced (the Host is dipped into the Precious Blood). It is forbidded to recieve an intinced Host in the Hand.

I can be one of the most ardent supporters on CAF of the current Mass, but even I know that this comment is just wrong. Communion on the tongue is a “thinking” and “custom” of the Post Vatican II Church as well.
