Why would you need contraception during a homily? That’s not how you get pregnant.

A homily should illuminate the word of God that was read that day at mass…it should not be a vehicle for a priest to talk about the topic du jour. One of the major deficiencies in preaching is when the preacher fails to allow himself to break open the word of God.

It would seem to be a rare occasion when discussing teaching on contraception would be appropriate for the homily.

I think the good Homilist could wrap a few different Homilies around almost any Daily Scripture depending on the interpretation given.

I can remember one time. It was at the Our Lady of the Snows shrine in Belleville, IL, run by Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Just tune in to EWTN’s daily mass. Fr. Angelus doesn’t hold back. As far as locally, my parish priest has included it in a homily once or twice.

God Bless…

Interestingly enough, I have heard it condemend twice. One of which will suprise a lot of liturgical conservatives because it was during the homily at a charismatic Mass. For what ever concerns one might have with the liturgy at charismatic Masses, the homilies at the Catholic Charismatic Center here in Houston are consistently true to Church teaching. The other time was at an indult Tridentine Mass.
