Hello all, I was reading an article in the February 15th 2010 edition of the Washington Times. It was about monks in Ohio, but from a Church I’ve never heard of! I am a Latin Catholic and have studied Eastern Christianity (informally) for years, and I thought, wow, what an interesting sounding church. It was called “Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Church.” What first caught my attention was the prefix “Syro-” preceeding “Russian.” I’ve never seen those two together before. Also, never seen Orthodox and Catholic together in a Church’s “official” title. (I am aware that other Churches use “Catholic”). Is this some small, small Sui Juiris Catholic Church? Is it an Orthodox Church, perhaps a branch off of the Moscow Patriarchate?

Never hear of it before, but I was able to find an item about it here. If I read the item correctly, this would seem to be merely another independent outfit that one might want to avoid.

Thanks, I just came across the same website. Interesting, but sad. We must all continue to pray for the reunion of all of Christ’s followers.

In their history, they mention Bishop Joseph Villate (misspelled as Vilathi). Any jurisdiction with him in their Apostolic Succession as a consecrator or co-consecrator is axiomatically schismatic, for he was schismatic before he was involved in consecrations. He left communion with Rome for the Old Catholics, and left them for independent praxis, and fathered a number of “independent Catholic” and several “Independent Orthodox” churches by consecrating bishops.

They are in a category called “Vagante”… “Wandering”… They tentatively have valid orders, but often have little training in seminary, if any, and many can not prove their hierarchy; few last beyond their founding bishop.

**I have, frequently.

The full name of the Johnstown jurisdiction is “The American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church”.

For years the OCA used, “The Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of North America.”

And I’ve seen canonical Orthodox parishes with “Orthodox Catholic” as part of their legal corporate names.**

You see, I learn something new everyday! Thanks bpbasilphx! 👍 I guess I was more thrown off by the “Syro-Russian” part. Thanks for the answers, fellows!

I think I may have seen it listed under a list of non-Canonical “Orthodox Churches” once

Also I once had associates with Church of the East lines who also affiliated with non Canonical Polish Eastern Orthodox. It sounds like these folks may have been associates of people I once knew. (There aren’t many people who try to cross breed Assyrian and Byzantine tradition etc.)

Unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of the paper anymore (already in the recycling bin at the street). The article was about how they want to take a motel that was in severe disrepair and used for prostitution and take control to turn it into a Monastery of sorts.

I saw articles about that. Here’s AP’s google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gmnodiwGcp0EDf60hAH4rGpT2ZEQD9DQQUEO1

And as I understand it, churches that have the name Catholic and Orthodox in their title aren’t in Communion with the Pope or with the Orthodox Churches. In other words, they’re not actually Catholic and not actually Orthodox. Seems true of this particular one, check out this site aggreen.net/other_orthodox/other.html

There’s a parish where I live that calls itself Eastern Catholic and I was interested in attending their Divine Liturgy so I called and asked for information and got to talking to their priest and found out that they aren’t in Communion with Rome. I can’t for the life of me figure out where they came from.
