For those wanting a massive online listing of saints, cross-referenced, listed alphabetically, by topic, and more, you can see the Patron Saints Index online.

And may the God of peace himself
sanctify you in all things;
that your whole spirit, and soul, and body,
may be preserved blameless
in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

I am excited about this!! Printing the page right now. Plan to have DH pick out of a hat tonight to see who our family patron saint is. Can’t wait to see which saint picks us!

Hmmm. Saint Benedict. I need to research more about him. This oughta be interesting. Thanks Peace Pilgrim! 👍

Thank you.

Saint Catherine of Siena. Interesting enough, my grandmother’s name was Catherine and I named my daughter after her. I’ll have to study up on her.

This is a wonderful idea to pick a saint for the year. We will do it from the Catholic Answers guide to Saints.

Yes, I am delighted that there is a list from CA! The more complete the better. Thank you to Catherine Grant, for kindly posting that wonderful list that is new to me. Yes, I will use it! I have posted the Patron Saints Index site’s link to my webpage.

Before I was baptized Catholic this past Easter Vigil, I knew of just a handful of saints. To think, I have ALL of these role models and exemplars of the faith to call on and learn how to become a saint. I truly do believe that we are each called to sainthood!

Thank you to those who have posted here with love. I can’t help smiling that God has used me to play a little role in matchmaking you with your saint for the year! (One of my saints last year was St. Valentine and maybe he taught me a thing or two) I have enjoyed your comments very much and I have felt very welcomed here with your words. (This forum is new to me)

As an update, I can tell you that my saints that chose me – The Holy Souls of Purgatory – are much closer now than a few days ago, thanks to the great leads that **Catholic Sam ** posted on this thread. Thank you!

That said, this is to netmil(name removed by moderator):

You wrote:
If you do not see an Imprimatur on any writings about a private revelation, you are not to read it, let alone promote it.
I reiterate: I am a new Catholic. I must say your tone takes me aback when I hear it from long-term Catholics like yourself. Your roots may be sunk deep, but new Catholics like me are still growing rootlets. Our roots can be quickly uprooted by peremptory words as yours. (Many of my Catholic friends tell me that such cold tones by catechists turned them off to the faith for years; but by the Grace of God and the Warmth of His Love, they are back in the Church)

Reread what you have written. I think your imperious, cold tone may shock even yourself. Listen, God is about LOVE. Let us live that LOVE with one another. Words are powerful, let us speak with LOVE.

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” Unfortunately, a lot of Christians present more of an image of a noisy gong or a clanging symbol than the love of Christ. It does not matter how lofty our words or how eloquent our speech. It doesn’t matter how much spiritual wisdom we can proclaim nor how many Bible verses we can quote. What really matters is how much love we show others. Jesus has called us to a life of service, a life of caring for others, a life of loving the helpless and encouraging the hopeless.

It is a sad fact that we Christians can sometimes become very arrogant about our theology and very self-righteous about our good works. How many times have you heard one group of Christians look down their noses at the way another church believes or how another church worships! Paul is saying that all arrogance and self-righteousness is nothing but noise and clanging. If we want to make sweet music, we must learn how to have love for others."

Thank goodness, Our Lord used loving words and his gentleness in correcting the new lambs as they were coming into the fold in his day! May I suggest a more kind and charitable approach as Jesus’?

I am not challenging here. I want to learn. Can you give me references to back up your statement: “If you do not see an Imprimatur on any writings about a private revelation, you are not to read it, let alone promote it.”

Lourdes was not immediately recognized. Fatima was formally recognized only 13 years later, while Guadalupe delayed 200 years. Does that mean that all of those millions of people who were reading news releases, magazine articles, and books about those apparitions before they were recognized – COUNTLESS MANY Catholics included – were in violation as you imply and should not have read those writings? Perhaps yourself included if you were reading about Juan Diego before his sainthood?

As far as your statement about false worship: before you EVEN insinuate that I am worshiping Mary. It is latria that I offer to God and God alone; He and only He is to be worshipped – and who I worship. It is hyperdulia (veneration) that I offer Our Lady. You don’t know me. Please go to confession for calumny and slandering someone who do not know!.

By careful not to fall into the trap of maintaining some pharaisical sense of power as an arbiter of right and wrong without a loving hand. You may be siding with the Devil when you turn tender young babes in the Faith away with your actions and words.

You are my sister in Christ. I love you and I will not sit back and allow you to continue to hurt new ones like me or threaten our fledging faith when we are seeking to know, love and serve Our Lord. God bless you and may your heart be softened by His Love. I wish you sweet music…

In your sig you write: “To Jesus through Mary. I love my Parish!” I am happy that you do, will you love someone who is not in your parish? Will you love me?

You also write in your sig: “It is better to be hated for who you are, than be loved for who you’re not.” I would prefer to love you for the Christian soul that you are that He is waiting to receive in heaven one day soon.
**
To Alison.**

I knew we were meant to be friends! I love seeing and feeling your warm and gentle heart through your words. There are no accidents; God brought us here together. God bless you, dear one!
And now back to the thread:

Yes, this is a wonderful tradition. May the Holy Spirit guide your saint to you!

May God bless each and every one of you future saints in Catholic Answers. This is a wonderful place that God has made to help us help each other to holiness and sainthood.

Smack!!! Whack!!!
Oooo, that left a mark.
I love you, that’s why I wrote what I did, friend. You forget that you challenged another poster first on her motivation.

Perhaps a little research on Canon 823 would help. Here is a bit of it from EWTN on another “seer”.

Some additional research on Medjugore might help as well. Start here from the Bishop’s website.

Click on Medjugore and this is the start of the article in English…
****MEĐUGORJE: **** ****SECRETS, MESSAGES, VOCATIONS, PRAYERS, CONFESSIONS, COMMISSIONS ****

Ratko Perić, bishop of Mostar-Duvno

Medjugorje is a parish in the diocese of Mostar-Duvno in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with a population of about 4,000 persons, which has been entrusted to the pastoral care of the Franciscan fathers OFM. From 24 June 1981 onwards, some events have been occurring which many people, some Franciscans included, have attributed to so-called apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who has seemingly presented herself as the “Queen of Peace”.

It goes on to explain the whole circus going on there.

You may have taken my strong tone as a personal afront. I apologize, however the Devil comes to us in many forms. More often it is with sweet than with sour. The “seers” and their handlers make it pretty sweet.

This is your quote to another poster…
I must admit that your word “bizarre” took me aback. It sounded harsh and inflammatory. I wondered if I should just ignore your comment or respond. WWJD? I’ve decided to respond with as much kindness as I can muster, giving you the benefit of the doubt that it was a reactionary comment and not an act of intentional calumny (a sin).

You seem to have the impression that if an apparition is not approved it is to be deemed “bad”. This is simply NOT TRUE. I must speak up, otherwise I am contributing to the perpetuation of an untruth and an accomplice to sin.

"Local Church leaders sometimes feel they must keep Medjugorje “under wraps” until formal Church approval is given. However, because of the extraordinary occurrences which have taken place there, Rome has established for itself a very different pastoral response; a response of cautious support rather than distance.
References?

WWJD.

I think He would return to the reason for the post but be cautious about printing misinformation. Stay safe. If an Imprimatur on printed information regarding private revelation. Look up “Little Pebble” and see how many of his followers wished they did the same.

And on that happy note, I’m outta here.

It is true that the Devil appears sweet but is really sour. St. Ignatius of Loyola (since we’re on the topic of Saints) was trying to discern bad spirits from good spirits. He experienced a vision once wherein he saw a BEAUTIFUL serpent-figure which seemed to give him feelings of much happiness and pleasure; in any case, he experienced “feelings” of happiness and pleasure but he realized that it did not last long and was temporary. His previous visions and experiences that came from God were lasting and the happiness genuine BUT this serpent vision was not lasting. Therefore he discerned that this was an evil spirit. You can read this in the Autobiography Ignatius wrote of his life (he is the founder of the Jesuits). Things may appear to sound and look plausible but they can be used to deceive us.

The Truth may sound like a personal attack but is not intended that way. However, Lies may not necessarily sound like a personal attack but are intended to do just that and do more than attack the person but attack the Church. Jesus often corrected for things that went against the Truth such as when he reacted to the scene in the temple where people were selling things within.

My point is, love is not a feeling but an act of love. By standing up for truth one may appear like they are attacking the person but is not intended that way. It is an act of love to let someone else know the truth no matter how much it could hurt “feelings” but it is not intended to hurt anyone’s feelings.
Sorry for the length of this and my inability to stay on topic…so let me end…Go SAINTS

You are all called to be Saints!

Peace Pilgrim: you are also a kindred spirit. Thank you for your kindness; Glad to have met you. God love you

This thread was edited heavily. The reason is because it encouraged the veneration of people who are not recognized as saints. With over 10,000 saints who are recognized in the Roman Catholic Church alone, I’m sure our forum members will find a saint of their liking (or should I say, a saint will find a poster of his or her liking!) 🙂

Dear Saint Anthony, we are all pilgrims. We came from God and we are going to Him. He who created us will welcome us at journey’s end. The Lord Jesus is preparing a place for all His brothers and sisters. Saint Anthony, Guide of Pilgrims, direct our steps in the straight path. Protect us until we are safely home in heaven. Help us in all our needs and difficulties. Amen.

I got St. Gerard Majella. He is already my patron saint and I am named after him.

Thank you to Catherine Grant for providing the new link to the list of the most popular saints in my original post.

To those who are new to the forum: rest assured that Catherine is there to help us newbies who wander in guilelessly looking to get closer to God and God in the hearts of others. A peacemaker, she communicates with tact, kindness and gentleness that would make Our Lord proud!

My husband (former Buddhist; new Catholic) just tested out the new link, using the “close your eyes - scroll around - and land on your saint’s name” technique. It works great!

St. Francis of Assisi picked him. (Apparently we must have an affinity with Francis-cans.) What’s great about the new link is that you can immediately read up on the saint. We were surprised to learn he was never a priest, but a deacon.

What wasn’t apparent to my husband was immediately apparent to me: he is so much like St. Francis. I mean everyone – loved Francis. Everyone loves my husband. He is a happy soul and, as was Francis, sometimes too easy to like for his own good. Free spirits, they will get along just fine.

So who picked YOU? Tell us!

There are only 45 saints on that list…

Where’s a list with the 10,000?

Maybe some of them need a break?

St. Joan of Arc! I’m putting a prayer to her in my signature…

I didn’t do the drawing, but I recently read a book about St. Maximilian Kolbe. I’d had it for awhile, never got around to reading it, but finally did. There are some amazing lessons to take from his life. I’ll spend the year trying to be more like him!

I got St. Alexander…I had never heard of him before. He’s a martyr from Corinth. Hmmmmmm…I wonder what he has in store for me?

Hmm, I randomly choose St. Augustine of Hippo. Interestingly, my aunt was telling me about him last week, because he is the patron of their church. She was sending some booklets about him to me in the mail last I heard. Tim

St. Martin de Porres.
Amazing, my mom told me that this statue I’ve had all my life is of him. Did not know that.

St. Martin rules! 🙂
