well speaking in tongues,what is the motive behind it?

in group vs out group psychology speaking.

I am a super christian you are not, thats the motive behind it all.

It falls in the “I ok, your less then ok”.

Look at Matthew 7:22-24 people who think they are christians, do miracles in Jesus name, and yet they are not even going to heaven.

speaking in tongues, gibberish today is just emotionalism.

Look into the psychological research into tongue speaking.

Basically, pick up a tape of an earthly language that most americans would not know. A tape of known message or passage of scripture. Then play this tape for those who claim to have the gift of interpretation. What you will find is simply no one will give the correct interpretation period. This experiment has been repeated often by believers and by unbelievers. Never has anyone even come close to the correct interpretation of said tapes, no NOT ONCE.

I am not sure why you would expect such an experiment to somehow “prove” tongues exist or do not. The passage was not sent from God for that group at that specific time, it was chosen by researchers for their own ends. It’s out of context.

Based on my experiences with folks in the charismatic movement, they would argue that God is not a trained seal to perform on commnand just to satisfy your curiosity.

Read the book Thank God for Evolution!, by Rev. Michael Dowd. He discusses the psychological benefits of ‘speaking in tongues’.

Psychological benefits are NOT why christians DID in the PAST(that we see in the bible) use this gift.
I dont see any reason for it anymore.

I cant stand the whole “movement” and have nothing to do with it.

I never spoke in tongues but attended a service where people did. I was rather taken aback and felt quite uncomfortable in such a surrounding.

However, at the same service, they began “singing” in tongues which was quite a pleasant listening experience all together.

Slain in the Spirit! Ah, that’s another thing. I don’t know how many times I saw people look behind them for someone to catch them before they were “slain in the spirit”. More psychological/emotional gobbeldy gook…

I have been slain in the spirit - I had doubts about it too, before it happened to me. I saw God. I was perfectly safe. It was a very peaceful experience. And yes, someone caught me when I went down. They didn’t think I was going to go down, because I was skeptical of the whole thing; they figured because of my lack of faith, it wouldn’t work - but it did. So they had to yell at my friend and get him to catch me, because all of a sudden, that was just it; I was going down, and there was nothing I could do about it. He got there in time, and he caught me. I don’t think I would have been hurt if he had not caught me, though. I didn’t feel myself to be in any danger of any kind at all.

Some of the people in my prayer group can speak in tongues, i was bring prayed over and they tried to get me to speak, but i didnt feel the holy spirit in me to speak in tongues, so i never tried.
I can say i never have, i just dont feel i have the gift.
