The reason is that I am extremely sensitive to gluten -I don’t even think I could handle a low-gluten host but I have yet to try -still though…

anyways is this a mortal sin? I still do spiritual communion.

You are only required to take Communion once a year at Easter time. But why wouldn’t you just skip the Body and take only the Blood? You receive the fullness of Christ, Body Blood Soul & Divinity under either species. Just speak to the priest outside of Mass about your medical condition and he will make sure to give your instruction/help.

The low-low-gluten host made by the Benedictine Sisters does not affect your antibody levels - many celiacs have been taking these hosts on a weekly basis and have not had a rise in antibodies. The Sisters worked long and hard to come up with a host that meets the standard to be consecrated.

Does your church consecrate the wine as well? You could ask for a dedicated cup and then go up and receive it yourself. Both my sons are on the GF diet and they just skip the host line and go straight up to receive the Blood. they just watch to be sure the Priest’s cup doesn’t go in the line they are in. I did get the hosts and a pyx for them but neither wanted to go through the trouble of involving me or anyone in their Eucharist. The real presence is in either substance, as you know.

Please do not keep yourself from receiving the sacrament - it’s not necessary. Talk with your priest and figure out a way to receive. Most celiacs bring the host in a pyx which they give to the EMs to be placed on the paten during consecration. Then one of the ministers brings the pyx down and the celiac goes to that EM, opens the pyx and takes out the Body and consumes it, and takes the pyx back home for the next week.

Any questions, PM me.

If you attend Mass you are not in mortal sin. Recieving communion is not required, although I personally think you are missing a lot of graces. Just recieve the blood. It is the whole Jesus, body, blood, soul and divintiy of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I would also suggest receiving the blood & speak to your pastor privately if it’s not currently offered to the congregation. It was only recently that I fully understood that the Whole of Christ is completely present in each part.

Did you try receiving the Eucharist in the past? Just wondering. I am on a gluten-free diet as well & seem to be very sensitive – I have problems eating at restaurants due to cross-contamination – but for some reason receiving the body does not affect me negatively at all. It makes no logical sense but I am quite happy that I’m able to continue to receive!!

If you are receiving the regular Host, you are most definitely receiving too much gluten…Have you had your antibody levels tested recently? You can receive the low-low-gluten host with very little difficulty as I described - why would you take chances with your health?

Sorry, I should mention I am not a diagnosed celiac (although I suspect I could be, but cannot undergo diagnosis at this time)… so I classify myself as ‘gluten intolerant’ and continue receiving the regular Host because I want to & it does not cause me any adverse symptoms. It was unclear whether the original poster is celiac or gluten intolerant – and regardless, I’m not trying to give medical advice, just stating something that is currently working for me! 🙂

It’s a precept of the Church to receive the Eucharist at least once a year. Not doing this is a mortal sin, if you didn’t have a good reason. A person with a gluten intolerance should receive from the chalice only, or use gluten-free hosts (this really only works at a church where the priest knows you & understands your situation- they’d have to store gluten-free hosts and set one out for you whenever they see you at Mass, or you’d have to have them at home, and bring one for yourself whenever you come to Mass- just, please, be sure not to confuse people into thinking you stole a consecrated host- don’t keep them in a way that strangers can see you with them in the pews or outside of church).

Remember that the smallest fragment of a host has the same value as the biggest host.

If you receive from the chalice, have a separate chalice. The priest’s chalice contains a fragment of a host.
