We actually have engravings of prayers to martyrs over the graves of Christians, dating to the first century, in the Roman catacombs. If there is any tradition that is established in the first century, it’s prayers the saints.

With that said, I still see your overarching point.

The point of the magisterium is to make sure that this doesn’t happen.
