Having a hard time letting go of Irish football

I’m not saying that God is a Notre Dame football fan, but I think he does intend to humiliate the very school who bears Our Lady’s name and claims catholicity.

Before the game vs. Tulsa, I wasn’t looking at the TV, but heard Fr. Jenkins prayer/speech. I say ‘prayer/speech’ because I’m not sure what it was that I was hearing. As a CATHOLIC priest, I assumed he’d open the prayer with the Sign of the Cross and end it by invoking the Name of the Holy Trinity. Also, when did we catholics and especially priests, stop praying for the departed? I may be mistaken, but I did NOT once hear this ministerial priest of God pray for the young man who had died. Oh, sure he prayed for just about everybody else in the world and at the university, but not a word for the young man’s soul can be recalled.

Having heard this prayer/speech, I just knew that the following football game was going to be a disaster and sure enough…it was.

This university continues to be of the world while paying lip service of being ‘catholic’. It continues to disobey the bishops of the Church and disobey fundamental Christian teaching of the Church. This school WILL bend its knees and be humbled, on its own or by God. Like I said, God may not be a football fan, but He will use the school’s precious little program as a tool, I believe. I have stopped encouraging my children to consider Notre Dame as an option of continued education, if that is indeed what they are called to do. Rather, I am encouraging my kids to attend such schools as Franciscan University in Stuebenville, OH. ONLY if they are called to attend college. After all, these schools do have sports programs that my kids can take advantage of as extra-curricular. I’m saddened that’s it’s come down to this, but I honestly have a feeling that unless the ‘leaders’ within Notre Dame get their faith back in order and take the school back into the catholic direction, Notre Dame will no longer be Our Lady’s school. May God hear the prayers of the faithful who are still in the faculty and alumni and may Our Lady’s intercessions bring reform.

well this family is losing its status as long time Irish fans (the Indiana branch anyhow) for various reasons, but certainly not because they think God is punishing the school by killing an innocent person for the alleged misdemeanors of the administration (or coaching staff).

have you a link to a news story as required by this forum, perhaps one where God strikes ND by lightening because of the way a priest prays or does not pray?

Sorry, I had copied this from a thread i created in a Notre Dame fan website, so the context of the death of a ND student wasn’t necessarily established here. I apologize. A student camera-man was working on filming a football practice session and a gust of wind had blown so bad that the kid came tumbling down with the gear and was killed.

The reason I apologize is because you were confused and thought that I was saying that God would strike down a kid like this to make a message when I was actually saying that God would/could use the ‘precious’ football program as a possible tool to bend some knees. That’s all I was suggesting. I’m sure he’ll bend some knees in other ways as well, but not by killing the student

I understand your line of thinking. There seems to be a serious lack of something in the water there. Maybe the loss of money will humble them to reevaluate their priorities. How much money was lost from alumni no longer donating b/c of the university’s red carpet service for Obama? How much will be lost in a wrongful death lawsuit? Is God responsible? No, but
He does allow for us to be humbled by our own failings.

Notre Dame’s not going to get any better if all of the faithful pack up and abandon it. In fact, you can almost guarantee the opposite will happen.

My coworker’s sister is a faithful, orthodox Catholic and a university professor, and she’s interested in joining the ND faculty. I really hope she gets the opportunity to do so. We are called to spread the message of Christ, not contain it solely within already faithful or orthodox circles. And Notre Dame is as good of a place to do so as any.

As much as I have disliked Notre Dame since my college days, I have to agree with you. The U.S. is being outeducated by so many foreign universities it is really getting pitiful. We need all universities to muster up their math and science programs amongst other things. Notre Dame needs to regain its leadership position in education. The sports thing is just a fascade. The University of Chicago does well without any sports programs.
