Having a Mass said for non-Catholic?

My son was not Catholic when he died, but he had been Baptised in a Christian church when he was 12. I had left the Catholic Church a few years before he was born so the boys were taught many Catholic ways, but not completely, as they should have been. He was 27 when he passed away. I have only been back for 9 months and there is so much to learn again. Can I have a Mass said for him?? If I can, is there a charge?? I hate to bother the Priest here with everything because there is only one priest and he is very busy. Are there special prayers I can offer for my son?? Thank you for your time.

My ex-boss, the second longest serving Texas lawmaker, died three years ago. He was Methodist, but, he always gave me allowances to go to Mass. He even went to Mass with me on occasion. When he died, I had Masses offered for the repose of his soul. The usual stipend is $5. You don’t have to tell the parish office he wasn’t Catholic. The merits and graces of the Mass would certainly help the repose of your son’s soul. You can offer the rosary for him.

Yes, you can certainly have a Mass said for him–in fact it would be a very good thing indeed. Masses can be offered for anyone, living or deceased. Don’t hesitate to ask the priest to say a Mass for him. Many parishes have little cards (or something similar) to request a Mass. If you don’t see them readily available, just write on a notepaper his name, the word “deceased” (so the priest knows) and your name as the person requesting the Mass. This is simply so that the priest has something in writing to remind him and to get the names correct. Don’t worry about the priest being “too busy” because he’s already saying Mass, so you’re not adding anything to his schedule that he isn’t already doing.

Of course you can have masses said for him. Our parish is the only Catholic one in a small town and it’s rare not to have at least one Mass offered for anyone who dies in the town, regardless of what Church they attended. The stipend you offer for a Mass depends on where you live and what was set by the diocese. In our parish it’s $10 but if someone drops off $5 with a Mass request that’s what’s accepted.

Your pastor can schedule a Mass or Masses to be said for your son there is usually a small stipen, usually $5 or $10. You will be notified of the date and time so you can attend if you want.

My mother is deceased and was Jewish, and I am not even Catholic yet myself (I’m a catechumen), and I have had 2 masses said for her. Also, in our parish you don’t even speak to the priest about arranging the mass, you arrange it with the parish secretary. Either way, like others said I wouldn’t worry about disturbing your priest, he is going to be saying mass anyhow.

Your son was Catholic. Even if you’re not a practicing Catholic, once you’re baptized a Catholic, you remain so until you write your bishop and tell him you don’t want to be Catholic anymore.
