Is it still a normal practice to have a priest come bless your home?
My husband and I have moved around several times (military) and I’ve actually never had it done. However, we will be purchasing a house soon and I’m wondering if this is still typical? Or will my new priest look at me like a whacko for asking? 😉 🙂

Thank you!

I have no idea if it’s “typical” or not, but we had our house blessed right after we bought it about 3 years ago.
We were fairly new to the area and our Parish (well, technically I was the new one to the area).
Our Parish Priest was kind enough to come out and bless our house. It was great and I never would have thought to do it. Hubby wanted to do it right away.

Just for context purposes…hubby and I were in our late twenties when we did this and we did it only a couple of months after we moved in.

Sure, it’s still done! 🙂

We just called the parish and left a message for Father, asking him if we could make an appointment to have him over to bless the house. He called back a few days later, we scheduled it, and that was that. Took about 15 minutes. Sadly, he was too busy to stay for dinner, but seeing as he’s one priest for a 3,000+ family parish, I was impressed he could make it at all, much less within a week or so!

Yes, it is still done, and in a parish insert of ministries that was listed and encouraged.

I did have my home blessed about 16 years ago, and so did my neighbor. We attended each other’s house blessing.

We are still neighbors and a lot older! We each live alone, (widows) and will be asking our pastor to come and bless our homes. Life is a lot different at 78 and 83! We are still able to get to Mass by car together.

Both priests in our parish have offered to do this.

We look forward to it!

We’ve had it done twice (once about 11 years ago and once when we bought our current house). It’s a lovely ceremony.

Go right ahead!

Yes. We had it done about eight years ago on our old house, plus we were enthroned to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart.

In Ireland its normal.to do this.when you get a house

We have a priest do it every time we move. We invite our priest over for dinner and ask him to bless the house. (note, you might want to make sure you ask the priest if he will do this before he comes over for dinner so he can be prepared.)
If you are moving to a new parish this is also a great way to meet the priest and establish a relationship with the parish. The priest can network for you.

I wouldn’t live in a house or apartment that isn’t blessed. Bad things can happen in a house that’s not blessed.
