I recently obtained an icon, and was wondering how I might go about getting it blessed. I bought a manual from an icon store called “The Blessing of Icons” that seems to describe a lengthy ceremony, but I have also heard that one must leave the icon on the altar for 40 days.

Can anyone fill me in? Also, if it were to be simply blessed by a Latin priest, would it be “less” of an icon?

The blessing of a priest of one sui juris church is as effecacious as the blessing of a priest of another sui juris church.

While it is customary among the Greek churches to leave a new icon in the Altar for 40 days, where it absorbs holiness (as it were), there are also relatively short (by our standards) prayers of blessing in the Slavic Churches.

There are some who say that the blessing of an icon is unnecessary, beacuse it derives its sanctity from the prototype (the saint or mystery depicted).

At our church the priest likes an icon to be on the alter for at least one liturgy.
