Having foot surgery for a bone spur next Friday

Hi everyone. Next Friday (not this Friday), I am having foot surgery for a bone spur. I am going to be under general anesthesia for the procedure. I have never been under general anesthesia before. Does anyone know if they have an antidote for the anesthesia if I were to be allergic to it? I’m not allergic to any medications that I know of so I suppose I probably won’t be allergic to the anesthesia but it still worries me. Anyway, please pray that the surgery is successful and that the bone spur does not return.

Holly - please ease your mind and have faith, it is highly unlikely that you will have a bad reaction to anesthesia, and even if you do, anesthesiologists are carefully trained to watch for warning signs.

Hi everyone. I have an appointment before the surgery tomorrow. I will find out what time the surgery is to be done tomorrow. Please pray for me that all would go well.
 
Praying your surgery is a success, you heal quickly and the spur does not come back.

Anyway, an update for you all! I have to be there at 11:30 AM on Friday but the surgery won’t start till 1 PM. I am going to be under a type of anesthetic that is different from general anesthesia (can’t remember the name of it) where I’ll still be asleep but it is safer than general anesthesia. I also have to have someone stay with me for 24 hours afterward so Darrell, my best friend in the whole world, is going to stay the night with me that night.

I am going to instruct the surgery center to call a Catholic priest immediately should anything go wrong so that I can be anointed in case I am in danger of death but I am going to have them call a priest if anything goes wrong because I want to be anointed regardless of whether I am in danger of death or not.

That said, please continue to keep me in your prayers. My doctor said I would be able to walk again immediately but that I’ll have to wear some kind of boot. He also said that I’ll have to wear a dressing on the surgical site for something like 10 days afterward. This means that I won’t be able to take a shower unless I put plastic around my foot to keep it from getting wet. Or I can take a sponge bath.

Again, please keep me in your prayers.

You can relax about the anesthesia. My sister has had quite a few operations of various types, and more than once had a bad reaction. They knew exactly what to do, and they did it.

I’m sure you’ll do fine, and when the pain of the spur is gone, you’ll be so happy. When your feet hurt, everything hurts.

You’re so welcome, Holly. The first 30 years of my life were spent as a flat footed ballerina. Great flexibility but not so much support. My spurs started during pregnancy and by the time the kid was born, they were so bad I could barely walk. I put off having the cortisone shots because the thought of a needle in my foot was pretty scary. Nobody mentioned they would use that liquid nitrogen stuff to totally numb the foot first. I suffered for about 6 years before I couldn’t stand it anymore.

I had cortisone shots over the course of an entire summer. After the first one, I walked home. I couldn’t walk two blocks to take the kids to school, but that day I was able to walk about 3 miles from the doctor’s office. We lived in Brooklyn, and I stayed on main streets so I could take the bus if I needed to do so. It hurt again a little the next day from the shot, not the spur, but that was over fast. I had 19 shots in the right foot and 23 in the left. I had a recurrence on the left foot about 23 years later, had 3 or 4 shots, wore orthodics for a while, and it’s fine.

Just think, in a little more than a week, you’re pain is going to be gone. I’m already smiling.

Yep. I am pretty happy about that. Anyway, I’m sorry to hear of all the pain that you had to go through.
