Is it OK (licit, legal, acceptable) to have a Mass said for a deceased person and his family of they are not Cathoilc. Something horrible happened with a coworker.
On one occasion in the parish I used to live a lady had organised a Catholic funeral for her departed husband who was a non-practising Anglican .
I asked if permission was given (by the family assuming the person has died) before having a Mass said for a non-Catholic.That’s an interesting question, would you care to elaborate further?
It should be fine, its certainly kosher to do so. Although you never know how it will be taken in 2018, some people take offense at anything. Is it OK (licit, legal, acceptable) to have a Mass said for a deceased person and his family of they are not Cathoilc. How do you know that? It might well be very offensive. The practice is unfamiliar to non-Catholics and for those who come from the reformed tradition, praying for the dead is the height of heresy. Please do not assume that something familiar to you would bring comfort to others. It may do just the opposite.Non Catholics wouldn’t take offense at receiving mass cards for their deceased loved ones.
I’m talking about back in the day.How do you know that? It might well be very offensive. The practice is unfamiliar to non-Catholics
Really? I have found just the opposite to be true. When I was young, Catholics tended to be ghettoized if they lived in urban areas and not a lot of intermingling took place. When I was a young man, people of all faiths weren’t religiously illiterate and were generally familiar with Catholic practices.
