Where can I have masses said for others, other than at my own parish? Places that are legit and really do say them…

any religious order of priests, especially missionary orders, will gladly assign your Mass intentions to a priest, and a donation for support of the missions or work of the order is welcomed but not required. most Catholic magazines have ads in the back with contact info on various orders. several orders supply beautiful Mass cards for you to give the family of the person for whom you are offering the Mass. they are free, again, donation welcome but not required.

I have heard that masses said for the living do far more good than those said when you are dead.
I would dispute this…mainly because it’s hard to quantify the “good” that a Mass does…If you’re given the grace to persevere in the face of adversity, is that more important than a soul being released from purgatory? …ooh…that’s a good poll…

I just had 2 masses said for myself. I have heard that masses said for the living do far more good than those said when you are dead.
The pious tradition is that a set of Gregorian masses said for the repose of a soul will release that soul from Purgatory. What more good can you want?

In any case, any mass said for me doesn’t do me any good. I have made the heroic act, so it automatically gets transferred to some soul in purgatory anyhow.

“A great doctor of the Church, St. Anself, declares that a single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death. St. Leonard of Port Maurice supports this statement by saying that one Mass before death may be more profitable than many after it.”

Having masses said for the Holy Souls in Purgatory will free these poor souls to pray for you once they are in Heaven.

“Who is without an interest in Purgatory? Who has not, somewhere, a treasure buried in that dreary casket called a grave? And had they none, were they of the few who have never lost a friend, should their interest in Purgatory be any the less strong and deep, since God’s friends are there and God desires them elsewhere? Reflect on what you do when you aid to release one of these prisoners of love. You free a soul from dire woe, from inexpressible suffering; you add a citizen to Heaven; you give joy to the Angels and Saints; you comfort and delight Jesus and His Mother Mary.”

From the writings of Sister Charles Borromea, O. S. D

The more souls freed from Purgatory by your prayers, the more you will have prayers in Heaven said for you!

Google “Mass intentions” and you will find links to many Orders which have specific Mass intentions. It is a pious custom here in south Louisiana. My brother, sister, and I received many lovely Mass cards when both my mother and father passed away. I send them to my friends when their parents pass away.

Thank you. I have gone over my budget, and find I can afford one set of Gregorian masses per month. I’ve just ordered the 4th month for my deceased cousin, lapsed catholic, drug addict who diied from her addiction. Previous masses were for my biological father, my step-father, and a FOAF.

As a Chaplain’s Assistant in the Army, I recall that our chaplain sometimes received correspondence from the States regarding having Masses said. Am not sure how to contact the Millitary Ordinariate anymore. Maybe another poster can give an assist.
