Has the Church ever (ie, pre- and post-V@) prohibited having Masses said for people who have died who were not Catholic?

Thanks, Tawny and Chatter! Do you know about before Vatican 2?

I know in late 18th century England, Masses for the non-Catholics dead were done but not publicly celebrated or announced.

You just put the stipend in the envelope, wrote the name for the Mass intention on it, and no one asked you if the deceased was Catholic. They just scheduled the Mass.
