Hi all!

Real quick background: Graduate student, in LOVE with my church and parish at school, but really cannot stand my church at home and the other two options in our town…thoughts? Suggestions about what to do? Prayers and answers so welcomed.

Really having a hard time getting to mass. I haven’t missed in years, but skipped the past two weekends (last weekend couldn’t make it, this weekend was a battle to not go). The priests are good, but the homilies are so dry and the music is so terrible.

Go anyway. It’s about the Real Presence of Jesus, our Saviour. Everything else, while irritating, not inspirational, etc. is merely commentary.

Oh, just re-read your post and I’m happy to pray for you. 🙂

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen. †

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the Fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.

Amen. †

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle,
be our defense against the wickedness and snares
of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray.
And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the
power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other
evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen. †

St. Thérèse of Liseux Prayer From “Story of A Soul”

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Amen. †

Lord, thank you that you are with me right now.
Your love surpasses all fear.
I give you the anxiety I feel.
I surrender all my worries to you.
Clear my mind;
Calm my heart;
Still my Spirit;
Relax my being, that, I may
always glorify you in everything
I write, speak and do.

Amen. †

The problem is that you are going to Mass for your entertainment.

You’re aren’t going to Mass for the right reason. The reason to go to Mass is to give thanks to God for everything and to offer up the sacrifice of Jesus to Him.

So change your mentality on the Mass and I think you will find that you will enjoy it a lot more.

Are there multiple Mass times? Earlier Masses tend to have little (or no) music. Personally, I would find a dry homily easier to sit through than bad music.

For Help in Trials

Most holy apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of. Pray for me who feels so hopeless. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular Mercy Saved Me), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Gracious and merciful Father, please come to their assistance.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,

Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

I disagree with this. I’m not going for entertainment. The issue is those other things being so aversive that it drives me away…prayers and suggestions were welcome, not criticism.

Go to the Mass anyway; offer it all up to God. Praying to the Holy Spirit to give you guidance, direction, strength, fortitude & wisdom in your time of need.

I know your suffering firsthand. Nothing is harder to ignore than an off tune rendition of “On Eagles’ Wings” played on guitar and kazoo. First things I can think:

Do you have the option of an earlier Mass (say 8 instead of 11, for example)? Your best bet to avoid music.

Any religious communities nearby? I have Dominican sisters nearby and their Mass is always solemn.

I agree with Tawney. Offer up these aversions to God and persevere in going to mass. Praying for you…
