I’m sorry for this dramatic sounding title. I would just be very grateful for some prayers 😦

I am an only child in my family and only Catholic. I’m discerning religious life or consecrated life in the world.

For the past while I’ve been struggling with the idea that I may not be able to be a nun, and since over the years this became dear to my heart, this felt like being “rejected” by God. I know that can’t be true and I’m reminding myself of Saints I know who weren’t nuns like St Kateri. But the feelings aren’t going away, even if they’re just feelings. I don’t know where God wants me, everything is uncertain.
I’m trying to surrender to God’s Will.

Yesterday my mom found out that I’ve been seriously thinking of religious life, and since then its been really difficult. I’d rather not say what happened in this discussion. My mom saw signs of this but now that the signs have been confirmed, I fear our relationship would be over, if not now then later. My mom said some things that i feared a lot she would say. I feel guilty for causing this suffering for her. I’m also worried that if I do someday become a nun, it would shorten my parents life through grief. I don’t know how to deal with this thought and i felt a doubt - does this mean I can’t be a nun? Yet I know there are many religious who had extreme opposition to their vocation. My mom’s reaction to me being consecrated in the world would not be too much better I think, based on the reasoning she expressed. There would be no enclosure, but no marriage either.

At the same time, I see no option except continuing to seek God’s Will, and to put Him first.

Since this happened, I’m just having trouble going on. I don’t mean discernment but just in general. Please pray for my mom, and for me, and for God to help me understand His will. Thank you

Remembering you and your mother in my daily prayers. God bless!

Do you have a spiritual director? That might be most fruitful for you to help you discern.

I will say that in my darkest time (the way you describe feeling, I’ve felt as well) I kept hearing, “Wait and watch.”

So I worked hard at staying still, not rushing off to do what I really really wanted to do. Over time my own heart was changed, and the direction God wanted me to go became clearer.

I don’t know if that message for me is perfect for you, but I’m just trying to express that there isn’t a hurry (unless God makes it very clear otherwise). Take your time, pray, listen, and love your mom the best you can.

I will pray for you sweetie; God bless you.

PRAYER OF
SELF-SURRENDER

Lord, what do you want me to do?
What decision do you want me to make?
Where do you want my life to go?
The only way I can decide, Lord, is to put myself in your hands.
Like a potter takes clay and makes something of it,
Like you took a rib and made a woman,
Take me and give me whatever shape you want.
Or if you want, break the clay to pieces and start over again.
Do with me whatever you want.

It doesn’t matter if I am loved or hated,
praised or calumniated, consoled or friendless.
What matters is that your will be done in me.
Help me to follow the example of your Mother
and say “Let it be done to me according to your Word.”

I’m not looking for any big sacrifice, Lord, or any heavy cross.
Something like that would only make me proud.
Help me to do your will in little things,
To put up with misunderstandings, rash judgments,
confusion and frustration,
To be patient and peaceful with those who drive me crazy.

Let me love you by doing the little things
that will not bring me any satisfaction.

Amen.

PRAYER TO SERVE GOD WELL

Father of Mercy,
forgive my failings,
keep me in Your Grace,
and lead me in the way of salvation.
Give me strength in serving You
as a follower of Christ.
May the Eucharist bring me Your Forgiveness
and give me freedom to serve You all my life.
May it help me to remain faithful
and give me the grace I need in Your service.
May it teach me the way to eternal life.
Amen.

If you are sound mind and hopefully of body you need to follow your calling. Note that a “nun” is a enclosed-cloistered. A Sister is of the apostolic nature. She has a foot on both sides of the religious life. She can go “home” at times, work in the secular world as needed according to her communities constitution and still lead a “religious life.” A cloistered Nun can not, seldom see families or friend or venture “out.”

Your mother is probably fearful that she will never see you, have contact with you or be available if she falls ill or is alone or in need.

I think most mothers balk at the idea that their child would be interested in religious life, esp. if they are non-Catholic and apply a bit of emotional blackmail to the “child.” Most parents do come around and become very supportive and proud of their "child’s choice. I hope this becomes the case for you. In the meantime you have my prayers that you make the right decisions for the right reasons. Peace and prayers for you and your mother.

Thank you all… Today it really seems like my relationship with my mom is extremely damaged, it feels like its over. If I enter a monastery I might never see her again. In any case, even if I become a consecrated person in the world, because I won’t marry, my life would seem a failure to my mom and something tragic and heartbreaking. My mom told me I have a year to change. I am frightened where this is going, and I can’t do much except pray, because I truly felt like I shouldn’t marry and gave myself to God. I can’t say no to Him… If I enter a monastery it would be even worse.

I have heard of people being disowned, of parents saying that the son or daughter is not their child anymore. My mom’s reaction was so strong that I’m scared of this.

I know she is really hurting… I feel guilty … I’m scared I discerned incorrectly.

Thank you again for the prayers…

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Prayer Against Depression
………….By St Ignatius of Loyola

O Christ Jesus
When all is darkness
And we feel our weakness and helplessness,
Give us the sense of Your Presence,
Your Love and Your Strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
In Your protecting love
And strengthening power,
So that nothing may frighten or worry us,
For, living close to You,
We shall see Your Hand,
Your Purpose, Your Will through all things.

Amen.

Let Nothing Disturb You

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.

Patience,
Obtains all things,
Whoever has God
Lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

St. Thérèse of Liseux Prayer From “Story of A Soul”

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Amen.

Lord, thank you that you are with me right now.
Your love surpasses all fear.
I give you the anxiety I feel.
I surrender all my worries to you.
Clear my mind;
Calm my heart;
Still my Spirit;
Relax my being, that, I may
always glorify you in everything
I write, speak and do.

Amen.

Jesus, Help Me

In every need let me come to Thee with humble trust, saying,
Jesus, help me!

In all my doubts, perplexities, and temptations,
Jesus, help me!

In hours of loneliness, weariness and trials,
Jesus, help me!

In the failure of my plans and hopes; in disappointments, troubles and sorrows,
Jesus, help me!

When my heart is cast down by failure, at seeing no good come from my efforts,
Jesus, help me!

When others fail me, and Thy grace alone can assist me,
Jesus, help me!

When I throw myself on Thy tender love as Father and Savior,
Jesus, help me!

When I feel impatient, and my cross irritates me,
Jesus, help me!

When sickness and loneliness overcome me,
Jesus, help me!

Always, in weakness, falls and shortcomings of every kind,
Jesus, help me and never forsake me.

Thank You, dear Lord Jesus.

Amen.

Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love.
Sweet Heart of my Jesus, grant that I may always love You more.
Heart of Jesus, burning with love for us, set our hearts on fire with love of You.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like Your Heart.

Amen.

Prayers said. All will be well. Do not fear, the Lord is protecting you.
Do not be lonely, your guardian angel is beside you.
Be comforted, Mother will watch over you, and the
Holy Spirit will guide you.

Amen.

My Jesus,
I believe that You are
present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and
I desire to receive You into my soul.
**Since I cannot at this moment receive
You sacramentally, come at least spiritually
into my heart. I embrace You
as if You were already there and
unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated
from You.

Amen.

Piarist fathers have taught this short act of
Spiritual Communion, popularized by St. Josemaria Escriva:

I wish, Lord, to receive You with the purity, humility and
devotion with which Your most holy Mother received You, with the
spirit and fervour of the saints.

Amen.

**
Thank You dear Lord Jesus, always and
everywhere, for everything.

Amen.

Jesus, I trust in You.

Amen.

Saying prayers for God’s will to be done, and for an acceptance of His will for all those involved.

Most the things we worry about don’t happen. Praying for you.

Thank you so much for the prayers everyone! 🙂 the situation with my mom hasn’t improved but I feel consolation and peace from Jesus, that He is with me.

Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins my Mother;
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful;
O Mother of thy Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy clemency hear and answer me.
Amen

May Jesus first always be in our hearts!

Jesus says “I have come to bring a sword, not peace.”

Jesus, thank you for reminding us that You are to be first in our lives.

Bring our loved ones to the understanding they should have. Come Holy Spirit!

“A [person’s] foes shall be those of his
own household…whoever loves [her] mom
more than Me is not worthy of me” the Lord
seems to be saying (Matt. 10:36-37)

Lord, I’m unworthy that You should enter
under my roof, but only say the word and
my soul shall be healed!
Amen.

The only thing I can add is that whereas your mother gave you corporal life God breathed your soul into that life. We are not owned by parents, but given into their care. Peace, blessings and prayers for both of you.

Praying for you and your mother. Don’t give up. Remember that many Saints had to face opposition from their families, including great men like Saint Thomas Aquinas. Even Pope Francis’ mother wasn’t too thrilled when he announced his vocation to the priesthood.

“If my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will take me up.” (Psalm 27)

Putting you in my daily prayers. May the Lord speak loud enough and clear enough for you to discern His will.
