Hello all,

I was having a discussion with my mother the other night about how abortion is wrong. She’s says that she believes abortion is wrong but will not stop another woman from doing what she wants with her own body. Then she throws out the scenario of a rape or incest victim and says that these are scenarios where women should be really allowed to have an abortion. How do I convince my mother that abortion is wrong? Are there some resources that’s you could point me to? Thanks.

PS. Abortion of a baby as the result of rape or incest is still considered to be morally wrong, right?

Yes, abortion is always wrong, regardless of how conception was achieved.

Abortion is wrong because it takes a human life. There’s really no better argument for it than that. It doesn’t matter if that life is recognizably human, can or can’t live outside the womb, is deformed or any of the other “arguments” the pro-abortion people would give.

A child at conception is biologically what it will be a birth – a human being. No one has the right to decide when that life ends but God Himself.

Good luck with your mom. I’ll pray for her 🙂

Search the Catholic Answers main site…I am sure there are lots of articles…

(sometimes giving something to a family member to read can be effective)

Of course it is not the woman’s body…it is a baby. And it is not the baby’s fault how it came to exist. It has rights independent of its Father.

Even if it was her body…is she going think she should not stop you from harming yourself??? Of course she is.

This is a little person.

That baby too is a person as Dr. Seuss put it in his childrens book…a person’s a person no matter how small…

Unfortunately the culture around us has slipped into some peoples thinking.

Ask her “Why would you murder a child because of a crime his father commited?” And tell her that it is NOT the women’s body that’s in a women’s uterus, it is the baby’s.

Check out the arguments made by Justice For All. I think their webpage is jfaweb.org. They use non-religious arguments to knock down every justification that the pro-choice people have. Hope this helps.

I have faced this argument too. I also believe human beings should have the right to choose what happens to to their own body, so i can SORT OF understand why one would feel that way about this issue. However, this issue is quite black and white. We NEVER have the right to murder another human being and that is exactly what abortion does. If a baby is conceived, then it is because it is God’s will.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide your words and give you courage and wisdom, when you stand up to protect the gift of Life.

Forcing someone to do something, against their free will, is wrong. Period. Making laws that interfere with free will, and shoving them down peoples throats, is what makes people ~not~ listen to you, when you try to explain to them, why something is morally wrong, in the first place.

2000 years, and Catholics ~still~ don’t get it. You can’t Fix people, by Force. Subject matter, doesn’t matter.

Ok look, making something illegal does not take away peoples free will. So are you saying that we should not have ANY laws because you think that they take away peoples free will?

Seek to understand the validity in your mother’s perspective for greater peace and development of patience and kindness.

From my understandings of your mom’s perspective:
Abortion is not an option for her personally.
She would not encourage abortion as an option, however she is empathetic towards women with traumatic experiences.

These seem well aligned with the Catholic Faith.
According to our faith, we are to have empathy and consideration for others. We are not to judge others. We are only to admonish those under our authority or those seeking our advice. We are to lead by example, especially through kindness and not by force.

My Step-Grandmother holds this position, that she would never have this option for herself and her family but that it must be left an open choice for other women.

You know what it is when you simply nod your head in agreement? When you let them hold that position you are being a spineless Christian; letting secular society win in their campaign to “Live and Let Live”.

You are telling them that you are wrong and they are right. That a human embryo does not deserve the same human rights that a grown adult does; that the only thing that validates are existance is if our biological creator WANTS US!

If you are unwanted by your parents, secular society tells us that you deserve to DIE!

If a person abides in all the following:
  1. Zero tolerance for one’s self
  2. Admonishing those under one’s authority
  3. Leading by example, patience while awaiting and ready to admonish when a sinner seeks one’s advice
  4. Complete tolerance for all others
Is s/he supporting sinfulness or nodding their head in agreement?

Hi,
Show her some pictures and videos and let her see how they mutilate a human being, that should convince anyone. The story of the silent scream. How an abortionist was aborting his own child and when he was watching his procedure, he could see the baby in distress and trying to get away from the instrument and after he had done the abortion he totally converted, because he realized he killed his own child and could see it knew that someone was trying to hurt it. He did hundred of abortions and now he is an advocate for pro life. He has a lot of penance to do.

Father Theodore Hessburg, wrote in his autobiography, “God, Country, Notre Dame” the following meditation about this issue:

“I am what you once were. You are, what I will be, if you let me.”

Hi dje101,

Please look at the links others have posted. They are good resources. Its difficult to just teach all the information in a day, but research is vital. ESPECIALLY in the abortion debate, because its so controversial. People are quick to skew facts, twist statistics, etc. So you really need to carefully sift through the information to get to the facts.

That being said, I’ll mention a few quick “one-liners” if you will to help get your mom on the right track.
I was having a discussion with my mother the other night about how abortion is wrong. She’s says that she believes abortion is wrong but will not stop another woman from doing what she wants with her own body.
  1. If it’s wrong, then why should someone be allowed to do it? That’s like saying “I think slavery is wrong, but I’m not going to stop another from doing what they want with their slaves”
  2. It’s not the mother’s body, it’s a baby’s body. The human fetus has a completely separate genetic code and is in every way a separate biological human entity. Hence, the “it’s my body” argument fails, because it’s not the woman’s body that is killed.
Then she throws out the scenario of a rape or incest victim and says that these are scenarios where women should be really allowed to have an abortion.
Only1% of abortions in the US are due to rape or incest (that statistic might be outdated). So what about the other 99%?
PS. Abortion of a baby as the result of rape or incest is still considered to be morally wrong, right?
Correct. Murder does not fix a rape or incest experience.

Yes, she’s being a pro-choice hypocrite who believes that if you were concieved out of incest or rape and were unwanted by your mother that this justifies KILLING YOU.

I find great alignment with the following attributes and Jesus’ attitude and behaviors regarding thoughts and acts of Hatred. People were even harming Him, and he did not stop them from doing what they wanted to do with their own bodies when they were killing him.
  1. Zero tolerance of hatred in one’s self
  2. Admonishing those under one’s authority
  3. Leading by example through kindness, patience while awaiting the call for help, and ready to admonish when a sinner seeks one’s advice
  4. Complete tolerance for all others

As I stated earlier, I think there is greater room for analysis and consideration of her thoughts.
She’s says that she believes abortion is wrong but will not stop another woman from doing what she wants with her own body.
"…she believes that abortion is wrong…" - Why try to convince her that it is wrong, when she already believes it is wrong?
Therefore the child and mother are discussing a separate issue other than ‘abortion is wrong.’
“…she will not stop another woman from doing what she wants…”
  • She supports and respects free-will as the Church teaches (CCC #1730). This could be labeled pro-choice, which if so, is the Truth.
…if you were concieved out of incest or rape and were unwanted by your mother that this justifies KILLING YOU
If one believes this, you are correct in your analysis of hypocrisy based on abortion is always unjustified.

Overall, I think the crux of the debate between the mother and child is should abortion be illegal. Confusion between the two becomes a factor when the child attempts to make it illegal according to the law of the land.
It is already illegal according to the Law of The Church/Love/Truth/God, however, anti-choice is also illegal.
Greater Question to Ponder: What is the BEST way to achieve BOTH, pro-choice and pro-life?
