My wife and I moved into a new house last spring and we would like to have a priest or deacon come over to bless it.

Have any of you had this done?
If so, what did you do for whoever came over and did the blessing?
Did you do something like give him a stipend or have him over for dinner?
I also assume this cannot be done during Lent.
Just curious. Thanks.

As a deacon who has done many house blessings. It’s very easy and relaxing hopefully for you as well. Lent is a very busy time around the church with extra devotions so it may be harder to set up a time. However, it can’t hurt to ask.

Yes, people have offered us stipends however, many times we just have been invited to a bbq or coffee and dessert…You can almost do anything you desire. Congratulations on your new home

Ian,

Congrats on the new home.

I had my house blessed a few years ago. Father came over after daily Mass (11:00am) so I made him lunch. That can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like it to be. Try to make sure that he isn’t on a restricted diet or has any food allergies.

I also gave hime a $10.00 stipend because it’s 20 miles round trip for him. Also, he’s an order priest so he’s taken a vow of poverty.

If you’d like any more info, feel free to pm or email me.

we invited the Deacon and his wife over when I had an open house for the catechists, he did the blessing and we all hung out gorging on finger foods and desserts. We had a lot of low carb low sugar stuff because both of them and half the catechists are on diets.

Had a few priests over in my lifetime. Usually after they bless the house we have dinner for them. It’s not that you can not do this during lent only that it is a very busy time for priests.

I have done house blessings and recently was asked how much does the church charge. I told the people that they could make a donation if they wished. I never expect anything( Freely give, what you have been freely given) but folks have been very generous. There is a beautiful liturgy for the blessing of homes in the Book of Blessings. Most people ,recently, have asked for a blessing in each individual room, garage and yard area. Also, it is important that all the people who live in the house be present, because part of the blessing includes them.

Hope this helps along with the other comments.

We did and it was lovely!

The priest read a few prayers (maybe an excerpt from the gospel; I can’t remember for sure) and then he went around and sprinkled holy water in each room. We asked him to use extra holy water in our teen aged son’s room 😉

I didn’t think to give him a stipend. I do know that he was coming up our way anyhow to help w/ our parish’s first penance ceremony.

We fed him lunch before he left for the church. —KCT
