HBO apologizes for offense, but will still air 'Big Love' temple scene

The creators of HBO’s controversial polygamy drama, “Big Love,” defended an upcoming episode depicting a scene of a sacred and private LDS temple ceremony that has riled some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Meanwhile, the TV network has apologized to those who may be offended by its contents.

“We therefore took great pains to depict the ceremony with the dignity and reverence it is due,” according to a statement by creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer. Both were editing the season finale this week and unavailable for interviews.

The duo’s unusual drama, about a modern-day Utah polygamous family, sparked controversy this week when Scheffer and Olsen announced that Sunday night’s episode will include an endowment ceremony in an LDS temple involving one of the sister wives, played by Jeanne Tripplehorn. The scene, which was apparently supervised by an “ex-Mormon,” includes sets of the temple’s celestial room and the sacred temple clothing worn during such ceremonies.

Since the Mormon Church helped get Proposition 8 passed, I think we can expect to see more popular media attacks on Mormonism.
 
it’s safe to say that no matter what the religion is, Catholic, LDS, Muslim, etc., the media will find some way to ridicule it. The title of this thread is great. HBO basically says sorry, but we’re still gonna do this anyway. :mad: I expect another South Park episode.

Even though our LDS brethren had a lot to do with it, the biggest single reason prop 8 won out is because of the African-American turnout. I wonder why they are not targets of ridicule and retribution like the Mormons have been…

yeah. i don’t watch shows that offend me. i don’t want to implement censorship though to eliminate those shows
 
I think the more important matter here is whether or not the ceremony is depicted accurately. Only LDS and former LDS will be able to tell us that. I realize that the LDS are offended by it being shown at all because of their policy to keep temple ceremonies secret, but this information is already available on the internet and any curious person can probably find everything there is to know about any temple ceremony online. So maybe an LDS or former LDS can watch the show and tell us if HBO gave it a fair shake or not.

oh yeah, I’ve never watched Big Love and won’t watch it now, but when something is obviously wrong or offensive, it’s great when people speak out. Just like when the Da Vinci Code came out and the US Catholic Bishops attempted to address inaccuracies.

I’ll watch it. I’m interested to see how they portray it and if they are accurate or not. They obviously will not show the entire endowment because it would take too long.

Of course. If I don’t feel comfortable watching something (which seldom happens to me) on TV, I just change the channel.

I wouldn’t waste my time on something that does not appeal to me.
