It’s a shame that someone has to get hurt before most people admit that there is a problem. Thing is, that’s assuming the person will survive the getting hurt part.

I agree. $80K is not punitive to a college. The family should appeal and make sure another zero is added to the number.

What exactly happened?

The story is very confusing - how could the boy have been killed while standing still and waiting with his mother?

It was an accident.
The money represents the degree of responsibility the university had, not the value of the child’s life.
This is a stupid thread which will end shortly due to a justifiable lack of interest.
Justice Tricia Kavanagh said the college was aware the gate system was not in good working order and carried out some rectification work but it had failed to ensure it was safe.

So what? Does that mean they could foresee someone being killed? Did they believe that the repair was sufficient but were negligent in their assessment? Stuff happens in life and there are degrees of responsibility, but that does not translate into your claim that a “5 year old is only worth 80,000”. Your statement reveals a fundamental inability to understand what the payment was for. It also reveals a level of hypocrisy in accepting the judges appraisal of the gate’s functionality while simultaneously rejecting her assessment of the financial liability for it’s role in this child’s death.
And for the record, on what basis does an agnostic place MONETARY value on a human life?? What do you propose as a fine and on what OBJECTIVE basis do you arrive at the number?
