I read once about a priest or other religious who while in a hospital bed claimed the Host he was brought and took was not consecrated. It turned out upon investigation that another priest incorrectly said the words at Mass and the Host was indeed not consecrated. The hospitalized person had no knowledge of this but knew he was not receiving Christ’s body. I believe this incident occurred hundreds of years ago. I checked through my books and searched the Internet for this but can’t find information. Is anyone familiar with and remember who and when it was?

I heard in one of Fr. Ripperger’s exorcism chats that one of the tests on a possessed person is to bring a series of unconsecrated hosts and one consecrated. The demon will not react to the hosts but will react violently to the Eucharist.

He does not tell the possessed person which it is.

Thanks for the replies. I searched through my books and found the booklet which tells of the incident. It was from “The Most Blessed Sacrament” written by Father Stephano Manelli in 1973. I searched his name and book title and found it online.

From the chapter titled The Real Presence:

"Also remarkable was an episode concerning St. Alphonsus M. Liguori when he received Holy Communion in his sickbed. One morning, as soon as he had received the host, he sighed aloud with tears, “What have you done: You have brought me a host without Jesus, an unconsecrated host!” The matter was investigated and it was learned that the priest who had said the Mass that morning had been so distracted that he had left out everything from the Memento for the Living to the Memento for the Dead in the Roman Canon, and had thereby completely omitted the consecration of the bread and wine. The Saint had detected the absence of Our Lord from the unconsecrated host! "

Here is the the whole booklet:
