Do you have a quote that you particularly like? I don’t mean one that you can come up with by googling a word, phrase or name – I mean one that you’ve actually encountered yourself in your reading or researching. It doesn’t have to be particularly profound – just one that you like and can briefly enlarge upon. Here’s one that I rather like:

Away with you, Mr. Kingsley, and fly into space. – John Henry Newman (from his Apologia)

I first heard Cardinal Newman’s name when I was in my teens but I didn’t get around to reading anything he wrote until maybe a decade later.

And what I liked about the way he floored Kingsley before proceeding to his main subject was the way he floored Kingsley before proceeding to his main subject.

What a wordsmith Newman was!

:Goonies never say die."

It’s not profound or religious, but it keeps a person going when it seems that he, one of the “little people”, should give up and admit that it’s the “power people” who will always prevail.

When you’re up against it, and you feel that you’re tilting at windmills, remember that “Goonies never say die.”

There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.

Life’s too short. Unless you’re immortal: then it’s too long.

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

From my grandmother, who was an amazing craftswoman and would never, EVER, let something less than perfect leave her hands:

“It’s good enough for who it’s for” and
“It’ll never be noticed on a galloping horse.”

From my mother, who is one of the most practical people I’ve ever met, and one of the most loving:

“Refusing to forgive those who do not ask is like getting run over by a bulldozer–and then standing in front of it and inviting a second performance.”

“People who count their chickens before they are hatched, act very wisely, because chickens run about so absurdly that it is impossible to count them accurately.” Oscar Wilde

And the ultimate in “run that by me again?” statements:

And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

Followed by the kicker:

The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?
