What is the source of your obedience?
What is the source of your endurance?

John 15
10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

Luke 12
45 "But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time to come back.’ Suppose he begins to beat the other servants. Suppose he feeds himself. And suppose he drinks until he gets drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come back on a day the servant doesn’t expect him. He will return at an hour the servant doesn’t know. Then the master will cut him to pieces. He will send him to the place where unbelievers go.

Matthew 10:22 "And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Matthew 24:13 "But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father.”

God’s grace enables us to persevere, but we still must persevere.

Unfortunately, some will reject this grace even after they have been sanctified:

Hebrews 10:29 “How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant** by which they were sanctified**, and outraged the Spirit?”

A faith can be shipwrecked. Can something you don’t have be shipwrecked?

1 Timothy 1:19 “Keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and their faith has been shipwrecked”.

Verse 39 says, "But we are not like those who shrink back to destruction, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

The fact is, some shrink back to destruction.

Why? Is this God’s will?

Do you believe it is simply a matter of God picking some of us out of a hat and leaving others?

But only for those where the seed is not retained.

1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

**3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. **

4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

5And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

**9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. **

10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

What does this verse mean?

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present your faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever, Amen

Eph 2 is a good starting point for discussion. We were spiritually dead because of our disobedience and sin. … Verse 4-10 Its God’s Mercy and Grace are sufficient to help us endure. 1 Cor 4:7. However we must be faithful at all times doing the things required of us. We must be doing something when he comes rather waiting and doing nothing.🙂

How is the doing something measured? How do you know if you are currently picking up the cross all the way? What if you decide that your going to visit your mother in the nursing home instead of going to Sunday Mass. What if your in a fatal car accident before your able to repent of a mortal sin. How do you know if you’ve endured until the end?

Rocket Man, do you know what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches on the questions which you ask here? If so, why are you asking? If not, why not buy a copy and read it?

LOL, that’s exactly the kind of caring instruction I had as a youngster.

Ok, good point, I apologize for my frustration. 🙂 The fact is, though, the answers to your questions are readily available, and too many people assume that they know what the Catholic Church teaches, without reading primary Catholic sources. It seemed that you were coming here, assuming that you know what Catholicism teaches, without reading what the Catholic Church itself says.

To answer your question, no one will go to Hell, simply because he/she dies before he/she has a chance to go to Confession. If a Catholic even has the desire (genuine desire) to go to Confession for a mortal sin, that person will not go to Hell. Of course, that desire must be acted upon as soon as possible. A failure to do so shows that one’s remorse and repentance are not genuine.

So, do you believe that if you do go to confession that that is all that is necessary to be saved? It seems to me that we are saved by grace through faith. Not by anything we do. But by what Jesus did for us.

Eph.2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Richard, for approximately the past five years, I have been a Reformed Protestant (Calvinist). If you know about Calvinists (or are one), then you know that they are (in general) vehemently opposed to the Catholic Church and to what they think that it teaches. Here is the problem-- many of them are badly misinformed.

Since 2004, I have been as anti-Catholic as the most fervent Protestant (in regard to the institution and what I thought that it taught, not in regard to individual Catholics). Brother, I have been wrong.

The Catholic Church teaches that we are saved by divine grace alone. The faith that we have, and the works that we do, are only possible because of God’s grace. Furthermore, the Catholic Church does not teach that our works save us. Anyone who tells you that the Church teaches a “gospel of works salvation” is either misinformed or lying.

However, if our ultimate salvation has nothing at all to do with anything we do, then why does the Bible say that he who endures to the end will be saved? (In my experience, you won’t hear that verse preached upon in many Protestant churches!)

If you continued to verse 10, we were created for good deeds which already prepared for us… Meaning Because of God’s grace he gave us faith and the fruit of this faith are the good deeds he prepared for us. You mean to tell us that the work of the Good Samaritan was useless. Then why Jeaches us to be good neighbors if works are not necessary. Remember we will be judged by the works we did and the words we speak. Read Mat 25, Rom 2:6, Gal 5:6. Praying in the Power of the Holy Spirit is what builds our faith, so is praying doing anything or not???

Salvation IS a gift - but it CAN be rejected. We cannot be saved when we are in the state of deadly sin (1 John 5:16), which MUST be confessed.
And guess what? True believers CAN fall:

Romans 11:22
****
“See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God’s kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.

Hebrews 10:26-27****
“If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins but a fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the adversaries.”

2 Peter 2:20-22****
**For if they, having escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ, again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition is worse than their first. **
For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them.

Final perseverence is one of the main things we pray about when meditating on the rosary. This is something I teach almost on a daily basis to my third graders. It is biblical. Therefore, it is Catholic.

How do you know if your picking up the cross all the way? If you go home at night to eat dinner instead of helping at the soup kitchen to feed the poor. Would this act be enduring to the end?

I certainly do not think nor do I think my post says or implies that works are not important. Here is your post again:

You seem to think here that your salvation hinges on whether or not you go into a box and tell your sins to another sinner. You say nothing here about faith or Jesus or His sacrifice. So, you can understand my concern. I certainly do not want to downplay the importance of works. They are important, but the only works that matter are a** result **of our acceptance of Christ and what He did for us. Any works done outside of that acceptance is utterly useless and will not get us into heaven. I guess my point is that a person could go into the confessional with the best of intentions and that person could recieve absolution and think they are sin free, but without that acceptance of what Jesus did for us, they are still in thier sins. This is the major concern I have with what the CC teaches. they seem to have usurped the power that rightly and only belong to Almighty God and as a result many or most or maybe all Catholics think that they can get to heaven because of thier misplaced faith in a church rather than in God.
